Canadian Place Names -- Discussion

Post by Matteo »

In general, if you are looking for place names or for maps and other useful references, you should go to Canadian Place Names -- Reference.

You can use this topic to search for information that has not yet been added to the Reference topic.

You can also use this topic to ask for help with reading a Canadian place name or locating the place.
Give us a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned and tell us approximately where it occurs on the page(s).

Note: Place names include lighthouses.

If you have information about a place name or find a useful reference, please help everyone by contributing it to this topic.

When contributing place names, try to provide as many of the following as possible:
  • Name in log
  • Latitude and Longitude (preferably in decimal format with a minimum of one decimal place - four decimal places is the preferred format)
  • Province
  • Current name (if different)
  • Link to more information
  • Also, in case of problems, a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned would be helpful
Don't worry if you can't supply all the information. Your link to the page will enable others to search for the missing information.
(You can save us even more work by using the template provided, but that is strictly optional.)

Any kind of geographical information in this topic is always welcome. A Google Map covering a specific ship or area is a good example of a much appreciated contribution. We will collect them in the corresponding Reference topic.

Cruice Rock

When I saw this, I thought it was Cruise Rock - took me a while to determine that was not the case!

I can remember one case i'm pretty sure the logkeeper had one too many... it was a Norwegian placename while i was helping the editing of M.24 with Geog data..

On 26 September 1919 the logkeeper was addressing either the town of Støtt or the island of Indrestøtt, and managed to write down Stortotot (they were finally returning home so maybe they toasted a little too much).

Another nice one from the same editing batch is the logkeeper addressing Lesopilka (with capital L) without realizing it's the russian word for "sawmill"... it took me a lot of time to figure out they must have seen a big building with sawmill written on it and decided it was the name of the place (other sawmills were addressed normally) :D

---
BTW: Cruice Rock added to database... will appear on reference soon! Thanks Hanibal!

Michael - that's amazing!! Wow! You're a wizard really aren't you? ;) I tried everything I could find listed as useful - obviously not well enough
I'm going to try this out so that I can find the next weird place that Capt Bodfish might come up with :D Now I can even find it in Geonames. I think that the NWT are having a laugh at me

Thank you!

You can search the Canadian Geographic Names database here: http://www4.nrcan.gc.ca/search-place-names/search.

The actual link for your bay is here: http://www4.rncan.gc.ca/search-place-names/unique/LAPID

You will see a link near the bottom of the page for the NWT place names. If you click on that link and enter the id LAPID into the search box, you will find:
Named by John Richardson, 1826, “out of respect to Capt. George McKinley, of the Naval asylum”. Named during Franklin’s Second Overland Expedition.
