Muster Rolls of U.S.S. Yantic 1873-1877

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Yantic: general for some general background and discussion.
See Yantic: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

Almost the entirety of January and February was spent en route from Batavia to Cape of Good Hope with the deaths of 2 crew members reported (this log keeper doesn't give a lot of event information, so no idea how it happened).

Now in mid March after a few days in Cape Town there are a fair few reports of poor discipline

Leaving the cape on March 23rd

It appears someone came by at some later date and crossed out the Wet bulb temperatures and left a note in the Latitude+Longitude section

Also a random Lat-Long combination appeares with no obvious time attached to it, this is repeated at least on the next page (both Wet bulb temperatures being crossed out and random timeless Lat-Long)

What should I do here?

The general rule is to ignore later additions and changes.
Philip Brohan, who founded OW, calls them vandalism.

I'm not sure, but I suspect that last Lat/Long and the number, (was it 1385, I don't have the image up), are for the Marsden squares or some variation of them. The idea was to collect the data and save them in the appropriate Marsden square. The data would be used to generate a climatology of the world. It would be very useful for sea captains to know the average wind speeds and directions, ocean currents and other data for each month of the year.

Finished this year.

Most of the time was spent sailing from Batavia to Norfolk via Cape of Good Hope and Barbados.

I might have missed a page of two of Wet bulb temperatures as they were crossed out and wasn't sure what to do.

Good work! :D :D :D I will try to get to it after I finish processing Yantic 1865. I will be away for three weeks, starting Saturday. I will get it done before then, or sometime after May 18th.

The voyage for 1877 has been completed. It was another excellent job by the Joke_Slayer. I don't know about slaying jokes, but he slayed these logs. The handwriting was difficult because the log-writer loved the giant flourishes. You can see a plot of the voyage here and, for more detail, you can download the KML file and view it with Google Earth. There were three mentions of people here.

These are the weather statistics for this voyage:
