China Station, Japan, Pacific and Indian Ocean -- Discussion

Post by Matteo »

In general, if you are looking for place names or for maps and other useful references, you should go to China Station, Japan, Pacific and Indian Ocean -- Reference.

You can use this topic to search for information that has not yet been added to the Reference topic.

You can also use this topic to ask for help with reading a Chinese/Japanese/Asian/Australian/Pacific Ocean place name or locating the place.
Give us a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned and tell us approximately where it occurs on the page(s).

Note: Place names include lighthouses.

If you have information about a place name or find a useful reference, please help everyone by contributing it to this topic.

When contributing place names, try to provide as many of the following as possible:
  • Country
  • Name in log
  • Latitude and Longitude (preferably in decimal format with a minimum of one decimal place - two decimal places is the preferred format)
  • Current name (if different)
  • Link to more information
  • Also, in case of problems, a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned would be helpful
Don't worry if you can't supply all the information. Your link to the page will enable others to search for the missing information.
(You can save us even more work by using the template provided, but that is strictly optional.)

Any kind of geographical information in this topic is always welcome. A Google Map covering a specific ship or area is a good example of a much appreciated contribution. We will collect them in the corresponding Reference topic.

Hello!

I'm currently in the process of editing the logs of the Albatross and had a question regarding a location in this log (commences and until 4am watch) - specifically, the lighthouse named 'Nogatsumi saki light'. The reference page and Geonames list it as an alternate name for 'Nagatsuromisaki' and 'Jogashima Lighthouse', but while I can find other sources that list 'Jogashima Lighthouse' as being on 'Nagatsuromisaki', I can't find one that links 'Nogatsumi' to either of the other two names, and was wondering how this connection was identified.

Thanks for any assistance! (This is really just to satisfy my curiosity more than anything else ;) ).

Hi there!

Not sure about how that alias came into our database, but I can guess it's something mispelled coming from a logpage (maybe repeatedly)... it's a common sight and since it can help transcribers we have tried to collect wrongly written names as well, unless the mistake is absolutely obvious.
Also (this has happened a few times) what seemed a bad mispell due to lack of sources was later found to be a real old name for some place, so we're trying to record all of them as well.

Since the lack of info (really can't remember but will try to dig deeper if i find the time - i'm curious too), and since we have several maps 1929-1945 covering Jogashima (you can check on OW Tools maps section), the most probable thing is that a logkeeper mentioning Nogatsumi Saki Light was cruising there in the period and the only plausible lighthouse in that position was the one on the western end of Joga Island... the light itself is there since 1870 and is one of the oldest western-style lighthouse in the whole Japan.
The light on the eastern end of the island (on Awazaki or Abosaki) is modern, and was built in 1962 (it's indeed missing from the maps we have).

If it was part of a three points bearing then it would have been an even easier match if the other two points were already known, as there would be little chances of getting it wrong even when other sources are missing.

---

Edit: The placename itself was added to the database on 25 November 2014, but haven't been able to find other information... since that's more or less the period we started building the Geog Help Board i think it was imported at a certain point from one of the previous sources (old threads, some of which are still available on the old forum, spreadsheets and individual PMs) when the reference thread was first created.
Judging from the handwriting (you probably can tell better as you've read it constantly) there would be little difference between Nogatsumi and Nogatsuru if the logkeeper was in a hurry... actually the writing appears more like Nogatsum (with saki on a newline), as the i is barely scratched on the paper.

March 4th 1893 Wm Baylies
Kanila Bay
Karrila Bay

And on 6th March:
Karula Bay
(They speak to the Bk Horatio and Andrew Hicks at 8 PM that day - cannot trace those logs)

From there they try to go NW (light winds prevail)
On 7th March:
7PM the West part of Maui bore by Compass N 60 miles

I think that this Bay might well be on the west coast of Hawaii.

Thank you for these, Randi :) They look to be very useful
Shame that that place has not shown up. but between mis-pronunciations and mis-spellings it's perhaps not that surprising :(
