On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (knots and fathoms), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
However, entries such as Ebb and Flood in the knots and fathoms columns can be omitted. In this case and other cases where no distance is specified, entries in the courses steered column indicate the ship's alignment rather displacement and can also omitted.
It is not necessary to record Leeway or State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta State of the Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

Just found out there are going to be a couple of other new ships available for everyone, so if it's OK I'm going to reserve a few more years on Ashuelot ... I'm quite keen on transcribing ships in Asia, and they seem hard to come by.

So I'd like to reserve 1869, the entire year.

Jan to Dec 1869 completed! Moving on to 1874 now.

For 1869, I didn't find many interesting things to note down, just the following (these are the ones I didn't think worth including in the xml files) :

The USS Oneida has been mentioned a few times. This short Wikipedia entry is worth reading.

This is all we have for USS Oneida for 1869.
I guess the rest was lost when the ship sank.

Here's one of the mentions of Ashuelot. At 2010 they exchange signals as Ashuelot enters the port of Hiogo.

On 14 August, we tow the USS Idaho out of Nagasaki harbor. Then, on the 20th of September, we tow her out of Yokohama and she is dismasted by a typhoon the next day. This is an interesting vessel to read about.

The voyage for 1869 is done. Many thanks to SleepyOwl for her meticulous work. This was a real challenge for both of us as there were many cases of times and places that were partially obscured. Most of the pages did not lie flat, so the writing on the left hand edge of the Event Page wasn't visible, and many images were of poor quality. Nevertheless, we were able to add another 33 new places to Matteo's Find Place database of place names.
