(Logs listed in fine print are not currently being transcribed because the ship is in California or Washington)

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

* Warning: The July segment is very disturbing. The captain attempts suicide.

See McCulloch — General for some general background and discussion.
See McCulloch — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

On July 4th, they let some guys go fishing, who were quite successful, and they did a boat race against the Rush but lost:

Oh, and at least two crew members got drunk, according to the next day's Noon - 4 PM section:

Content warning: Attempted suicide.

As mentioned elsewhere, the captain did attempt suicide in July - not once, but several times!

It started on the 7th, when the passenger Mrs. French called for help because she was being harassed by the captain, who was lurking outside her cabin for several hours and threatened to kill himself it she didn't come out.
The other officers found the captain intoxicated and called an emergency meeting, but decided to not relieve him of command yet.

But the next day, the captain tried to jump overboard but was stopped and secured in his cabin. The officers held another executive meeting, and decided to relieve him of command, confining him in his cabin with guards.

Then on the 10th, the captain tried to kill himself three times - once by trying to jump overboard, once by strangling himself with a curtain cord, and once by cutting his wrist with a piece of glass!
Fortunately, they were able to stop him every time.

On the 12th, he cut himself again, this time really bad - he severed an artery!
He struggled so hard while being treated that it took four men to keep him in his bunk, after which they put both his arms in splints and instructed watch to not let him put his hands out of sight or get out of his bed.

Finally on the 13th, he was sent to the Marine Hospital at Port Townsend (Mrs. French, the passenger he'd harassed, got off at Seattle later the same day).

This was quite something to read about - it sounds like he completely broke down mentally, and really was determined to take his own life, considering how many times he tried it over five days.
Can't imagine what it must have been like for the crew to witness all this...

Also: I believe this captain was none other than Michael "Hell Roaring" Augustine Healy, as on this page, it gives the commanding officer's name as "M. A. Healy".
In addition, his Wiki page lists the McCulloch as one of the vessels he served on, mentions other issues with drunkenness, and it says he retired in 1903, so he would have been active in 1900.

They've been using the poop [deck] compass for some bearings, I transcribe it as pc.

August done. She went to St. Michael and Nome, met the Patterson, Bear and Manning.

(June and July are done too, just forgot to report that because of what happened in July)

September 17th, 6 to 8 PM:

1st Lieutenant PW Thompson left the vessel and took passage on SS Tacoma for Seattle under authorization of Captain Coulson, in view of the fact of his having today received information by mail of the serious illness of his mother who is alone and entirely dependent on him
Kudos to Captain Coulson for doing the right thing!

October done. They had some very strong winds and rough seas, and went to rescue people from the wrecked "Cleveland" at one point.

November done, they just hung around in Dutch Harbor and eventually went south.
That's another year complete!
