On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See McCulloch — General for some general background and discussion.
See McCulloch — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

Sept 1 1904
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 1_0084.JPG
0900 Received information that six men of the party landed from the disabled ship "McLaurin" in the bight five miles off Wislow Is, Unalaska had started to walk over the mountains to Dutch Hbr.and some were left behind when the rest of the refugees were picked up by the "Rush" on August 31st.
It was supposed that the rest of the men might be lost and in need of food and a search party volunteered for service [names of men listed]

1200 Arrived near bight where "McLaurin's" party encamped, saw the six men on the beach, for whom vessel started to search.
1313 stopped and sent boat to pick up men.
1415 boat returned with men.
1600 returned native guides and returning refugees to “McClarin”

You need a different spreadsheet. It needs the 1904-1913 spreadsheet. It was called 1906-1913 and I've just renamed it to 1904-1913. I forgot to change the name of the spreadsheet when we ran into Sept Part 2 for 1904, and I had to add the URLs for those months. The logbooks for these older vessels changed their formats quite frequently, which is why I'm trying to keep 23 logbooks up to date.

Your welcome to use my SS template for similar log books, I have set it up about the easiest way you can find to enter the data. (Thats just the way I am)
The start cell is one row down as most data starts on that row so you only have to enter the top lines then its Alt F1 from row 2 down.
All Alt cells show the box nearer the data and there is no overwrite. Start and end cell clearly marked and Randys idea of cells one to the left is incorporated.

Let me know if you want it or/and any of the other templates I have done.

Stuart

P.S. This transcriber has a habit of putting 2 readings in the Knots column often followed by VAR or only 1 entry in the rest of the row.
Can I just add the two together instead of say a 8.3 | 1.2 entry just put 9.5?
Obviously I put two entries where they are shown in other columns if 2 entries in Knots.
Also where he has Brgs in Lat/Long I am putting it as Obs as I assume he is observing something to get brgs from. Then again he could be using brgs for DR. Call it (or add a Brgs option).

Go ahead and add the two numbers. That's what I do. As for using OBS as the type for a Lat/Long noted in the log as by Bearings, is perfect.

I'll get to work on it when I finish transcribing August 1943 for Haida.

The voyage for 1904 has been done with many thanks to Stuart! :D :D :D

Stuart had to contend with a log keeper who thought that N and W should be written the same way, leaving Stuart to sort out whether that scrawl was NNWxN, WNWxN, NNWxW or WNWxW.

The voyage plot can be seen here and, for more detail, you can download the KML file and view it with Google Earth.
