(Logs listed in fine print are not currently being transcribed because the ship is in California, Washington, or British Columbia)
On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.
On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.
One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.
Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
See
McCulloch — General for some general background and discussion.
See
McCulloch — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.
See
Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

June done. Some volcanic stuff at the very end of the month.
I have decided not to do any more Alaskan voyages after this one for a while because:
1. I'm getting tired of the same things and places every time
2. I saw a note that 1914 to 1916 on this ship are good for new-er people because they are mixed typed and written (Don't remember where exactly on the forum, sorry)
So when I'm done with this year, it's off to the Ashuelot for me.

Hi Chris.
I was also getting the same as you, tired of the same places.
I have swopped to a few different ships with different voyages just lately.
I have done Battle of Manilla Bay again on the McCulloch after doing it on the Concord (just to bring back memories).

23:30 Smelled disagreeable odor as from dead whale.
Nothing about this on the next day, though - maybe they couldn't see it because it was night

Interesting that they can guess the identity of the source.

I have heard it said that the smell of a dead whale is very powerful and unmistakable. Fortunately, I've never had the occasion to experience it.

Whale poo / vomit can sell for $7,000 a pound, making it one of the most expensive natural substances on the planet.
Whale vomit (ambergris) is used in perfumes.
Whale I'll be ...

This year is complete! I just finished and uploaded September and October - latter was just 8 days or so.
With that, the McCulloch is done for me (unless a Friendly Neighborhood Moderator asks me to finish off a leftover), as the remaining years are all good for new-ish people.
I will now go to the Manning to finish June 1913.
