On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Haida — General for some general background and discussion.
See Haida — Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

A couple of people were mentioned as being sent home, or returning from home after sick leave. I found that surprising that they would be living in Juneau, but perhaps one of two of the crew were locals. :?

I saw that in one of the logs myself and was a bit surprised.
If the ship was based in Alaska for long periods of time perhaps families moved there :?:

I remember several log entries concerning signing on new recruits at various Alaska locations. It's likely that bored young men would see the ship arrive and think it would be great to be able to get on the ship, leave this boring town, and see the world. So I wouldn't be surprised if there were locals who had previously enlisted when one of the Coast Guard cutters was in Juneau.

And it's wartime, so the CG may be very happy to get recruits.

I've also regularly seen the ship ferry the dependents of some of the men (wives and children) who would then stay in some sort of accomodation on shore while the ship was stationed in that location. I particularly remember seeing these details mentioned when she was stationed in Cordova, and on the list of officers page the next of kin was listed as residing in a hotel in the town.

I imagine its also why when the ship is in port liberty id granted until 6 am the following day, so that the guys with families could spend time with them while the ship is stationed in Juneau or some other port for months/years on end.

Yup, several people here have Juneau as their residence and wife the same.

The voyage for 1941 has been done. For the first part of the time it seems like we went to every lighthouse known to man and then for the rest of the time, we visited every place that had more than three people. There were even reports of ice!!!

Stellar work by Stuart who had simply thousands of course changes. You can see the voyage plot here and, for more detail, you can download the KML file and view it with Google Earth. Also, there were a few people mentioned.
