We transcribe the primary log, but the secondary log may be useful when you have trouble reading the primary.

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (knots and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Manning -- General for some general background and discussion.
See Manning -- Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See the Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

This year is mine.

(Also: The years 1911 to 1916 are not included in the "Plot" column of the status page. Would be nice if that was fixed.)

I'll mark it as Reserved in the status sheet.

I don't have the data from OW III. However, they gave me a few data files from OW III so I could compare various ships. I have plotted 1916 for Manning, but it isn't the best. You can see how the voyages look when you just interpolate between noon positions, and why I use all the data to get better positions. When OW started ten years ago, the resolution in the climate models wasn't very fine, but the resolution is doubling about every seven years, so grid spacing that was 100 km will be 25 km in another four years. (I can't remember if it used to be 100 or 200 km in 2010, but you can see that even if it was 200 km, it will be 50 km in a few short years.) I don't have the data for 1911-1915.

May done and uploaded. Just five days - she went from Port Townsend to Union Bay, B.C.

This new format may take some getting used to, but nothing I can't handle.

Got a bad place name at 15:00. I think it's one of the islands between Attu and Buldir (which they keep spelling "Bouldyr") Island, but under a different name.

And that's July done. Quite a bit of travel around Seward's icebox, with some icky place names.

August done. Some more travel and searching of schooners - I noticed that when they do that, they seem to split the Knots and Course values in two: One for before, one for after.
This page has a few examples: https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 2_0346.JPG

I think it's because they always stop for a short time to search a ship.
