Thank you to everyone who helped with the beta testing. The points that you raised are the backbone of these FAQs. New ideas always welcome - post them in this topic.

Please do suggest any tips/faqs that you might think would help us all. You can't run a whaling ship single-handed ;)
24 Oct: From ggordon: Any Mac OS users should be aware of this LibreOffice issue and workaround: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/10/2 ... _catalina/
20 Oct: noting miles in the 'distance column' (primary worksheet) Simply note the number, please do not write in 'miles'.

18 Oct: Handwriting helpLooked at the logbook image from every angle and still confused? Post the page logbook reference in the handwriting shipyard pages to get lots of help. Add an image if possible.
18 Oct: Handwriting helpmaking an image can be found here: Transcribing: capturing the log details, and information resources

16 Oct: Type what you see Although we select the text to transcribe please always do use the words and spelling used in the logbook itself. Not sure of a letter? Use the ~ character instead
14 Oct: What's-a-one-of-them? You will find odd words or phrases in the logs that are unknown to you - always ask about them. It's fun to learn about them, and helps us all

10 Oct: URL link for log pages If you view two pages at a time on your screen the url link in your browser line will only show the even number page link address. If you view one page at a time the url link will show the odd numbers too ;)
07 Oct: 1 Place names Commonly found place names mentioned in whaling logs. This is a new topic for the whaling boards, listing some of the most common names to be found in the whaler logs.

07 Oct: 2 Place names It is important to check that any place names from the logs are already held in the Geographical Help Board.
28 Sept: Time rows General remarks (for example, ships met, crew names) that you wish to note in the remarks column do *not* need their own time line. Simply put the data into the next closest time row for that date.

29 Sept: 'Autocorrect' in spreadsheets Autocorrect can be very handy - but it's worth taking a double look through inputs - any exactly repeated information is worth double checking :)

Thanks to April for pointing out that the re-size button on the logbook site is not showing up. You can move along the pages and that's it.
I'll try to get a work-around now and get the fault notified.

I have reported the loss of the magnify/reduce button as a fault to the Internet Archive Forum. One other person had already been in to report the problem. The only work around that I can find is to look below the image to find that you can download the book as a PDF. The files tend to be big (the size is given) and take a little while to download. I cannot tell if they are certainly free of computer viruses.
Frustrating as it is, we might end up having to wait a short while.

A couple of the logs come from a different source so I'll try to get to those quickly. Hang on in there folks - more fun will arrive soon ;) :D

18/10/20019 Thrilled to report that the magnify/reduce buttons are back in the rigging. Perhaps they were hiding up in the administrative crow's nest yesterday? ;) :D

The Archive is being a bit odd tonight/this afternoon. A few times I've had 'not obtainable' and a few times I've got to the site but the log book has not appeared. I will report this to the Archives now and let Kevin know.
The only way to dodge this problem would be to download the logbook (see the information below the image) but the files are large and you might not wish to download files from external places however illustrious they be.

Hopefully all will be well soon :)

20 Jan 2020: Place names Check the places that you find written in your log book. This is very important - two of three transcriptions must agree for us to use that datum. However we've been using three versions of some place names so that the place becomes 'lost' to the information that we are providing. If you are in any way unsure please always ask for help either by a pm, or in the Shipyard for that ship. I made a quick-refer list of many of the places here: Commonly found place names mentioned in whaling logs MANY THANKS!!

26 Nov: Always use the words written in the logbook Please always use the exact words from the log, even if you have to be selective with the words that you transcribe
26 Nov: Three sailing terms Please do keep these as short as possible. You can always write the transcription out in full in the Remarks column. If you have a lot of words and they are causing problems please do ask me for help. Thank you. :)

Hello everyone!

July 2021 New problem:
Wrong National Archive page number shows in the url:
Mysterious url page number problem on the National Archive images.
Once you magnify the image by about 3 clicks on the '+' symbol you will spot that the page number goes down by one. If you decrease the image size the page number returns to the correct number.
At the higher magnification, when moving between pages, the number may not change at all.

Continuing problems:
Wrong page number during change from one page to the next page.
The page number decreases by one as you leave one page and move to the next.

Opening a url page - the image starts about 2 pages prior.
If you open, for example, a url for a certain date you will see the log book page from two or three pages prior - simply move through to the correct page. As you change pages thereafter the url should change too (given the additional errors mentioned above).
