On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should be reported in the forum.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)


Ice hunting transcriptions were done for April 16 to June 7 and for July 13 to September 29, so only the date and the weather need to be done for those months now.
No transcriptions were done for January 1 to April 15, June 8 to July 12 and September 30 through December 31, so a full transcription is needed for those months.

00 to 04 The watch has been properly releived,
Gun, ammo and all info received.

The ship is now in Long Beach, California,
The following also I wish to inform ya.

Moored to pier baker, berth eighteen,
Six standard mooring lines can be seen.

Generator No. two is on the line
and boiler No. two is doing fine.

Ships present include fleet and yard craft,
And from here I can see merchantmen tied-up aft.

SOPA is RADM Thomas BURROWES, ComDesFlot three,
Whose life is dedicated to keeping the sea free.

He is flying his flag in U.S.S. Frontier,
Which is moored not far away from our pier.

The Captain's ashore, the Exec is too,
There's no one on board except a few.

Most of the crew are ashore full of cheer,
Gaily greeting this brand New Year.

Too all good sailors both far and near
We say "Smooth sailing throughout the year".

Although it is rare, occasionally you will see an entry with both temperature and text.
In that case, please put a comma between the number and the text as shown above.
Spaces are optional.

Forgot if I transcribe the stuff in the Magenta column? "REVS". Working on the lower half of JAN 1954

You only need to transcribe REVS if the LOG column is blank.
In general, you don't transcribe the magenta column.

We were out on exercises mid Feb and it may make for an interesting course picture.

I have changes some baro readings where the next entry is 1 more than the preceding and following like

Just leave them and I will fix them when I process the voyage. Or, if it so obvious as in this case, you can change them, in this case to 29.92.

You will find, with typed logs, that the typists made lots of mistakes. I don't know if the typists were getting paid by the hour, or paid by the page. I saw an article that examined transcribing work done by people getting paid by the character. The authors found that they were prone to making mistakes because they were going as fast as they could so they could get more money.

Long Beach Cal.

0005 Discovered LCVP and punt missing from pier forward of the ship.
Ingram, J.G. 55 21 63 BM3 USN and Epperly J.J. 372 40 11 SN USN was missing from ship.
Sent MAA and duty OOD to look for the boats and missing men.
0015 Ingram,J.G. 55 21 63 BM3 USN returned on board drunk and in improper uniform, was placed on report for breaking restriction and stealing government property. Was sent below and a watch posted on his bunk.
0025 Boats were found adrift and returned to their moorings.
Epperly was brought aboard drunk, dirty and disorderly in custody of Aderkin, R.L. EMC USN was turned over to duty hospital corpsman and duty MAA after being placed on report for breaking restrictions and stealing government property.

[Either a long time noticing the boats missing or the sailors hit some strong drinks.]
