On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should be reported in the forum.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)

Ice hunting transcriptions were done for January 1 to March 6 and for July 5 to September 25, so only the date and the weather need to be done for those months now.
No transcriptions were done for March 7 to July 4 and September 26 through December 31, so a full transcription is needed for those months.

See Burton Island -- General for some general background and discussion.
See Burton Island -- Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See the Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

Two observations- as I do not have a military, much less Navy background:
1. Jan 10 1952 Burton Island is in San Diego preparing to head north to Kodiak Is. The ship takes on 300 loaves of bread. Someone signs off on the quantity of bread, but the HMC (Chief Hospital Corpsman?) signs off as to Quality. If the bread ISN"T good, wouldn't it be a good idea for the Hospital Corpsman to be available??

2. One can only presume things are going to get worse when you are in port at San Diego and a Technologist from the Clothing Supply Office, Research and Development Division comes on board to evaluate cold weather clothing. (Jan 14, 1952)

More or less :)
According to https://www.cem.va.gov/CEM/docs/abbrevi ... s_Navy.pdf
HMC is HOSPITAL CORPSMAN CHIEF PETTY OFFICER
and
CSC is COMMISSARYMAN CHIEF PETTY OFFICER
Interesting that they have two different people checking the bread.

2. https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 1-0034.jpg
Supply Systems Command, Navy Department, 1980
Says: "...occasionally lived on icecaps in Greenland and aboard icebreakers in Alaska to study the effects of frigid climates on cold-weather clothing..."

And they seem to have had experts.

You know it is cold when report says "Alcohol in standard compass frozen." Burton Island has left Nome and is heading north. Feb 11, 1952.

I do get sidetracked digging as I go.

Me too!

Your link is not working for me. It looks like you accidentally pasted it into itself ;)

Try https://catalog.archives.gov/id/12101650 or https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 2-0026.jpg

I just checked, and both links work for me. The archives website occasionally goes down for a few minutes. The best thing is to try after a few minutes.

Feb '52 complete, except for 2/2/52. I was not able to bring up that image. I am unsure how to add the image to the data base. I left a comment in the tracking page.

In the meantime, I will read up on Transition months; please reserve March 1952 for me.

Thanks,
Morgan

Greetings.
I started on March 1952. Would appreciate your checking it out to see what I need to do differently. A couple items:
On the tracker- the 2nd stream indicates Ice, Location, course and distance, date and weather.
No ice to report at this time,
Note sure about location- I filled in the Lat/ Long wizard;
Course and Distance I filled in the log data
Date and Weather was as before.

I did not move in to Events.
One problem I ran into; for Image 19 (date of the 8th) the Longitude was recorded in degrees, Minutes and decimal just as similar days. The template, however had problems accepting a "Minute" entry of 78+. In reading the downloaded sheet, it appears to have finally accepted the number- but recorded it incorrectly. (The spreadsheet crashed on me several times until I determined what I thought was the problem. When I finally got it to go through without crashing, the entry looked wrong. )

Suggestions, corrections?
Thanks
Morgan

That seems correct to me. I haven't looked at the XML or the image data yet. You won't see ice for a while, they don't see it every day.
I did not move in to Events.
Events is generally where they will report ice, and they will occasionally mention things like course changes and locations etc. Those are important.

78 is not a valid number for a minute or a second. The Lat/Long Wizard will change 78 to 60 or 0, I forget which. It probably doesn't like the plus sign either. The best thing to do is not enter the 78 and then enter a trancriber's comment about the 78+ reading.
Suggestions, corrections?
Thanks

I'm being called away by my C.O., who will soon be expecting me to cook her supper... I imiagine Randi will look over things. I don't have time right now...

I just emailed you an example transcription of page 17.
You would enter DS (Date and Sailing Info) in the tracker for that page.

Page 18 is similar.

For the '78' minutes on page 19, the system resets it to 60.
You might use the Event Input Wizard to add an event with Type Transcriber Comment and Subype Location to explain the problem.

I added DLCW to the tracker for pages 16 and 19 ;)

Hullo, if it's OK I'd like to reserve all the events pages for 1952.
