The above is the crew list for the 1884-1885 journey.
There is another man aboard who is referred to often in the ship's log:

Mr. Garvin - this man is referred to as having his own boat and is clearly the most accomplished whaler aboard. It is possible that he is George S. Garvin who can be found listed as crew aboard 5 other vessels dating from 1864 thru 1884 prior to the journey aboard the John Carver. The 20 years experience would possibly explain his skill and having his own boat aboard.

I remember meeting the Helen Mar several times during OW Classic.

Ah that's a book I must read! Isn't it amazingly exciting when you see a familiar name?!? The poor Helen Mar had a desperate end. Crushed within minutes I believe that the tiny number of survivors did so by clinging to the sinking mast. I can't recall which ships log reported that - must have been the Orca I guess (info lost to Panoptes Talk ).

Description: The 110-foot (33.5 m) whaling bark sank in the Chukchi Sea northwest of Point Barrow, Territory of Alaska, with the loss of 27 lives after she was caught in a swift current and crushed between two icebergs. Her five survivors clung to her mainmast as she sank, escaped onto the ice, and were rescued on 8 October by the whaling steamer Orca

Needless to say they lost some toes to frost bite.

A story about how dangerous whaling is featuring Sam Varnam, Boatsteerer...

It's the 4th September 1884 and the Carver is still in the Atlantic a little way off the Ilha do Faial in the Azores.

'Sam Varnam Boatsteerer raised a sperm whales to the leeward going to the NW lowered three boats for them 2nd mate struck a large whale his boat stove afterwards the 2nd mate had his boat about used up by the whale 3rd mate picked him up I lowered down in the waist boat and afterward let the 2nd mate have her and came onboard'

A story about how exhausting chasing whales must be featuring Mr Hopkins up the mizzen mast and an 8 hour chase rowing after whales. These guys so earned their dinners!

5th October 1884 and 14 degrees west of Monrovia in Liberia

Sperm Whales was raised from the mizzen by Mr Hopkins- Whales off the weather quarter and going to the leeward. Lowered the mate and 2nd mate down with the 4th mate to steer the 2nd mate. Mate went on and struck and then I lowered in the waist boat. 2nd mate got fast and afterwards he and the mate both lost their whales. We chased on after the whales and afterwards the mate and myself got a whale each and the 2nd mate got two-took them alongside at nine oclock pm
