On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should be reported in the forum.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)

See Northwind -- General for some general background and discussion.
See Northwind -- Examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.
See the Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.
Post in Ask Questions Here or this topic if you have questions.

January done and uploaded. She started out in Seattle, then went north via outside - looks like she traveled with the Burton Island, as the latter was mentioned several times.

On to February, just gotta update my spreadsheet to 3.2 first.

Great!
That should give us a chance to compare instrument readings between the two ships.

February 9th was an interesting day.
https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 3_0058.JPG

At 08:30, a small explosion was reported in a generator room, but the only "casualty" was some litmus paper that was turned white.

Then at 18:50, the ship got caught in a pressure ridge!
Fortunately, she was able to get free - and the Burton Island helped by ramming the ice.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind-class_icebreaker#Construction wrote: The sides of the icebreaker were rounded, with marked tumblehome, that enabled the ship to break free from ice by heeling from side to side. Such heeling was accomplished by shifting water rapidly from wing tanks on one side of the ship to the other. A total of 220 tons of water could be shifted from one side to the other in as little as 90 seconds, which induced a list of 10 degrees.

Feb 11th, she got stuck in a pressure ridge - again - and had to be helped out by the Burton Island - again!

On Feb 16th, 14:35, the gyro compass broke and they used the magnetic compass instead:

http://navyadministration.tpub.com/14067/css/Chapter-2-Wachstanders-Equipment-25.htm wrote:Despite the excellence of the gyro mechanism, the magnetic compass is still standard equipment used aboard ship. Because the gyrocompass is powered by electricity, it would be useless in a power failure. It is an extremely complicated and delicate instrument, and it is subject to mechanical failure. For instance, some gyros become erratic after the ship makes a series of sharp turns at high speed.

February done and uploaded. This month had more ice than I've ever seen before - she spent almost all of it following the southern limit of the Arctic ice cap!
The Burton Island was with her, they took turns freeing each other from pressure ridges.

On to March, just gotta update my spreadsheet to 3.2 first, which I forgot to do after finishing January

Also, I have one request: Could someone please add a link to the file uploader to the bottom of this page, like with the other ships?

March done and uploaded. Bit of ice at the beginning, then she went to Seattle - which fortunately did not take long. I think she took the outside route.
(No idea whether the Burton Island came along, though)

There were a couple of interesting inserts while in Seattle:
https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 3_0115.JPG -> Someone was in jail overnight for safe-keeping, but was not charged with any misconduct upon return
https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 3_0115.JPG -> Two guys request leave (and get it), one to help his wife move to Seattle, the other just "to help out at home"

Anyways, on to April. My work is never done.

I shall make a quick trip to May.

And my quick trip is over - just uploaded May. She moved a bit around Puget Sound, but that was all.
On to June.
