On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.
On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.
One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.
Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
See
Yantic: general for some general background and discussion.
See
Yantic: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.
See
Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

I am not entering those either for my year, though it took me several days to realize what was going on
Hopefully its not too messy

Hi
I have just jumped ship from Kearserge when I finished the year. I have had Yantic 1883 reserved for some time.
Yantic 1883 is searching for the Greely party and I did the voyage on the Thetis when it was also searching for them.
See this for info on the Greely expedition.

Michael will certainly tell you if it is
(He should not be as he will just ignore those entries.)

The ship's heading is absolutely of no value. When they're anchored or moored all those values are blanked out of the final spreadsheet.
PS
I got fooled too and added them sometimes when they were in port.

I was curious about how many cloud types there could be in the logs.
The longest string:
Corwin
1884-06-29-02 cum cir / cum str / cir str
There were lots with five cloud types. Here are two:
Northwind
1954-08-18-15 cc as sc ac cs
Storis
1955-06-22-06 ci as cc ac cu
I just had this for Wind Direction from Omaha 1872:
S - SE | SE - SSW

They are still jumping ship.
This time for real.

Thoe. O'Neill (BM) deserted from the ship by jumping overboard and swimming for the shore; a boat was sent for him but failed to bring him back.
He was brought back onboard the following day.
