Muster Rolls of U.S.S. Yantic 1868-1872

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Yantic: general for some general background and discussion.
See Yantic: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

Commisioned on the 3rd Feb

First crew member to be put in irons was on the 8th Feb. Leaving ship without permission and returning drunk.
Another tried to leave ship next day.
14th Feb two jumped the Navy yard wall to escape the ship.
Good start (not)

Some funny temps around mid day 27s jumping up to 50s Entered as shown.

Pages keep moving sideways between dates.
Pages also change angle. I can see why no one wanted this block.

(Still it is not as bad as one of Michaels recent ships)

I'm back on another ship in 1863. Still fighting the US Civil War. I think this might be my third time, possibly my fourth. Just give thanks for the one you're on.

I had to laugh at this imaginary conversation between the captain and the navigator. "Let's wait for a pilot to take us in. It should be safer."
1005: NxE1/2E, 1045 let go stbd anchor. 1050 Pilot came on board.
1115: Got Underway. Steamed in for Hbr in charge of the pilot. 1120 Ran aground on the bar.
Ahhhh. The best laid plans!

The voyage for 1870 has been completed, with many thanks to Stuart for his consistent great work. I didn't think I would ever get all the plots calculated. Lots of course changes and new locations because the Yantic spent several months taking many soundings. Fortunately for me, they spent several months in the latter part of the year sitting in Santo Domingo. :D

You can see a plot of the voyage here and, for more detail, you can download the KML file and view it with Google Earth. There were several people mentioned here.

These are the weather statistics for this voyage:

Yantic travelled a total of 10,218 miles.

There was one mention of ice! We haven't seen any ice for quite a while!
