Muster Rolls of U.S.S. Shenandoah 1871-1874, 1879

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Shenandoah: general for some general background and discussion.
See Shenandoah: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

Someone was hoping to sleep late the next morning?

The logs for January 27 & 28 are scrambled.

Page 113:
The date on the event page is January 27. However the top of the weather page has the note, "for January 28th for January 27th turn over columns only" The distance and course columns have the comment, "For columns see next page."

I believe this page has the bearings in the locations section and the event page for January 27, and the weather columns for January 28. The entries in the event section are consistent with continuation from January 26 and are consistent with the distance and course columns on page 114.

Page 114:
The date on the event page is January 28. However the top of the weather page has the note, "for January 27th. for Jan 28th back"

I believe this page has the event page for January 28 and the weather columns for January 27.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 24-114.JPG

So my plan is to transcribe January 27 from the weather section on page 114 and the Noon location and events from page 113. January 28 will be transcribed from the weather section on page 113 and the event section from page 114.

I will include transcriber comments on both pages and add comments to the tracking spreadsheet.

For now I will resume transcribing on page 115 and come back here after I get feedback concerning these pages.

It's fortunate that we can change pages without clearing the data we have entered. Otherwise I would not be able to transcribe the data from two separate pages.

On February 4 at Spezzio, Italy, the ship went into dry dock at the Navy Yard.

February is complete.

For the entire month the ship was in Spezio, Italy undergoing repairs at the Navy Shipyard and clearing out and replacing spent shells from all of the gun salutes.

With so much idle time, I have never seen so many men being confined for drunkenness, fighting, leaving the ship without permission, or not returning from leave. Court Martial has been meeting nearly every day the entire month. Over a two day period, results of assessed penalties were read for a couple dozen men.

Then there was the case of the guy who was confined in double irons because his shoes had not been blacked for inspection. :o

It's a good thing I stopped transcribing people entries. February would have taken me another two or three months to complete.

March 16 at Barcelona, Spain:
At 2.30 PM H.E. The President of the Spanish Republic visited the Brooklyn & at 3 oclock came on board the "Shenandoah". Yards were manned in his honour. Our Marine Guard & band were sent on board the "Brooklyn" to assist at the reception of President Figueras.
