On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Kearsarge: general for some general background and discussion.
See Kearsarge: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

Anybody noticed when their vessel is in port for sometime the scribe gets bored and starts entering lots of x-y wind speeds or is it just mine. :(

I don't think I have ever seen a whole day of wind-speed ranges.

Strangest one I saw was when it was calm and the wind speed was recorded as 0-0.

Here's for you, Stuart. Notice the Weather as per cols.   Also, they are getting underway at noon, so maybe he was too busy with that to have time to record any weather.

It looks a little like an "N" with a couple of stray marks. The mark to the right could be part of the N if the log keeper lifted the pen while writing the N, and the mark to the left just a stray mark.

However, the event log for the 6PM to 8PM watch says that the wind was from the ENE. So it seems that ditto would be what was intended.

19/06/1890. Navy Yard, New York, NY
0500 Crossed TG yards and dressed ship to mast header today being the anniversary of the "Kearsarge's" engagement with the "Alabama".

The duel took place on June 19, 1864, in international waters off the coast of France, although close enough to be visible from shore.

Sorry but I have misnamed Colon as Colon, Panama.
It was in the 1890s Colon, Columbia.

Corrected Nov 1890
Sorry Michael.

No worries. I'm used to those parts of the world switching from one country to another without going anywhere. :D
