On the second-to-last line of the 0800-1200 paragraph, they mention two "Private Marines", which I initially read as "Pirate Marines"!

Editing Jamestown on 14 Jan 1883 in the meridian to 4pm watch. I read 'mind shifting from W to NW' then had a closer look and muttered about handwriting.

I find my mind wandering - nothing so purposeful as shifting from W to NW though!

During this voyage, we've been putting many people in double irons for fighting. So, when I came upon this I first read it as:

Mechanics engaged in quarrel jobbing.

Sure looks like that to me too

When scanning the Event page, I saw the Ship's writer as a Mr. Whiskey. That's what happens when there are too many men smuggling liquor on board, or being drunk and disorderly, I guess.

From 8 to Meridian. By order of the Comdg Office M. .E. Miskey (ships writer) and T. J. Brown (1^st class painter) were disrated this day.

I'm assuming the 17:00 entry is "got a cast of the lead", but it really looks like "got a cash of the land"!
