On the second-to-last line of the 0800-1200 paragraph, they mention two "Private Marines", which I initially read as "
Pirate Marines"!

Editing Jamestown on 14 Jan 1883 in the meridian to 4pm watch. I read 'mind shifting from W to NW' then had a closer look and muttered about handwriting.

When scanning the Event page, I saw the Ship's writer as a Mr. Whiskey. That's what happens when there are too many men smuggling liquor on board, or being drunk and disorderly, I guess.
From 8 to Meridian. By order of the Comdg Office M. .E. Miskey (ships writer) and T. J. Brown (1st class painter) were disrated this day.
