0000-0400 watch
Discovered a sailing vessel bearing ExN and standing towards us. She having no light set.
0345 The strange vessel which turned out to be a brig, collided with us, shifting our bow with his port quarter, immediately backed the engine and veered to 60 fathom chain, when she appeared clear of us. Did not ascertain her name, her crew being evidently asleep. carried away Jack Staff.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackstaff:
A jack staff (also spelled as jackstaff) is a small vertical spar (pole) on the bow of a ship or smaller vessel on which a particular type of flag, known as a jack, is flown. The jack staff was introduced in the 18th century.

17th Dec.
1030 Acting Master Wilkins left the ship on duty to board a vessel just arrived.
1145 He returned, and reported her to be BR Bark ? from New York?, bound for China. Put in for provisions & water having been 30 days North of Manila, and unable to reach Hong Kong, by reason of the very heavy weather.

I think we are stuck in Manila for the rest of the year.

If this weather model for the 3rd Dec 2021 is anything to go by it's no wonder we are staying in Manila Hbr

The maiden voyage of Ashuelot has been completed. Many thanks to Stuart did a great job contending with faded pages, old style double ss's that look like f''s and etc. A plot of the 20,000 mile voyage can be seen here. For more detail, you can download the KML file and view it in Google Earth. Thee were mentions of people, which can be seen here.
