That must have been SOME thunderstorm. The strength of updrafts to throw that chunk of ice up and down would be unbelievable!

Here are a couple pictures of a weather station tower I've been minding for the last few months! First pic is from setting it up in May, before we extended it, and second pic is it completely set up from a couple days ago. The T-shaped things on the right are enclosures for temperature/humidity sensors, and the ones on the right are combination 3-d anemometers and h2o/co2 sensors.
This is just a test of some new software and hardware in town, but it was nice to do a little fieldwork!

Neat bit of kit.
I want one to mount an antennae to improve my mobile (cell) reception which on a good day is about RSRP - 115, RSRQ -14, RSSI -94.

My friend, who was an inspector for Environment Canada in the Yukon sent me these when he retired. The post by ibhazel reminded me of his issues with the automatic weather station at Rock River, Yukon. It blew down at least twice and possibly more. Winds of 120 kmh will do that!

A rapidly deepening low pressure system from the Pacific will approach Vancouver Island today. Rain and strong winds will begin this morning.
Southeast winds of 70 to 90 km/h with gusts possibly exceeding 100 km/h are expected over North Vancouver Island. Southeasterly winds of 60 to 70 km/h with possible gusts to 90 will develop through east-west oriented valleys on Vancouver Island and along coastal regions near the Strait of Georgia and Haro Strait.
On Monday morning, as the low pressure system approaches the south coast, southeasterly winds will strengthen over the inner south coast. Western sections of Metro Vancouver will experience their strongest winds Monday morning with southeasterly gusts potentially exceeding 80 km/h before easing Monday evening.
As of now, there is increasing confidence for the strongest winds to be over West Vancouver Island and that the low pressure system will track across just north of central Vancouver Island on Monday evening.
Additional wind warnings may be issued as the event unfolds.
So far, the strongest one minute average wind speed, not gust, at Vancouver International Airport was from the remnants of Typhoon Frieda:

The storm is starting to come through Kent (SE of Seattle) now. The strongest gusts so far have been 20 km/h. Forecast here is for gusts up to 70 km/h. However, unless the wind is coming from exactly the right direction, winds at my house tend to be less than forecast. The Olympic Mountains and Coast Ranges block the winds and create a rain shadow so that Kent doesn't get the full force of storms coming through.
Rain started a few hours ago with 3.05 mm so far.

Not much here so far. Max gust 18 kmh at my house, and 47 at Gonzales Point, both at 2 p.m.

A couple of squalls came through this afternoon. The peak gust was 26 km/h. Winds were much stronger a few miles to the west, over the hill down by Puget Sound, and a few miles to the east up in the Cascade foothills. Both areas have widespread power outages now. Lights just flickered here. Rain hasn't amounted to much so far.
They are forecasting possible thunderstorms tonight and stronger winds tomorrow as the center of the low passes to the north over Vancouver Island.

This has been our weather so far. Those big winds at Race Rocks yesterday are the highest I've seen until now.

Ok, so you all make my report look pretty petty- but Long Beach had 18 hour of scattered drizzle adding up to < 0.75cm of rain. Big news for us. Better yet, it snowed in the mountains where we really need it.

Where I live the weather has been OK. We had some rain last night but no more than a few puddles on the road. However, just a few miles away we had closed roads due to floods. However, trains from Glasgow across the border are 'iffy' at best so it's either go over to Edinburgh and down the East coast line or wait until they decide the track is safe for full speed running when normal service will resume.

We had 61.2 mm of rain yesterday. The previous record, for the University of Victoria for the 28th of October, was 19.0 mm. The wettest October day was 31 October, 2015 with 45.8 mm.
The records for Victoria International had 20.0 mm for the 28th, and 136.0 mm set on October 16, 2003! The records for the airport go back to 1940, and they go back to 1993 for the University. The university is 2.2 nautical miles from my house, and the airport is 13.4. I was curious about that reading from the airport, because no record was set at the university that day. However, the daily precipitation data for the university for that October was a column of 31 M's.
I just thought of Esquimalt Harbor. They had 114.0 mm of rain on October 16, 2003. (they're 3.3 miles from our house.)
