Hmm. This can get confusing.

There is a Cape Spencer Light down towards the Juneau area. However, in this case the ship is up at Port Clarence where there is a Point Spencer. This site has a map indicating a light at Point Spencer.

$ ak spencer

Searching Places

Country , Name , Lat, Long, Subdivision , Note
US , Cape Spencer , 58.210, -136.665, Alaska ,
US , Cape Spencer Light , 58.199, -136.640, Alaska ,
US , Point Spencer , 65.279, -166.842, Alaska

Sometimes they use Point, Cape and Head interchangeably. I didn't look at the log page, so Point Spencer makes sense.

Using these two charts, the light seems to be in much the same place:

According to this article, the Point Spencer Army Airfield was closed down and mothballed around 1948 and intentionally destroyed around 1950. Maybe the light got destroyed in the process which would explain the need to find a new site for it.

Looks like my speculation as to the old light being destroyed was wrong. The next day's log has an entry giving location relative to the Point Spencer Light.

Wow, glad to hear I got them right! It's currently rather tedious, with all these locations and course changes to do. But at least it will be over soon - I peaked ahead, and they will get to the Last Frontier soon.

True, but I'm also kinda lazy, so I don't really feel like doing what you did ;)

I'm lazy, too, but a bunch of work up front saves lots of time and work in the future. ;) Mind you, have the positions of all these locations is more important to me because of what I'm doing.

June complete at last. Took a while, as she went to Alaska via the inside route, and there were badly written place names.

I am now done with the Northwind, and will head over to the Manning. Did a bit on her back in OW3, but that's practically ancient history as far as my brain is concerned.

An uneventful September is complete.

Komodo137 is working on October, so I'll skip ahead to November.
