USS Jamestown is in Rio de Janeiro in October 1851. On 27th the crew have emptied out and restowed the hold and the following footnote was appended to that day's log
'Broke out the hold and restowed provisions: found 81 barrels beef and 29 barrels pork
The Purser’s account of the same being 48 barrels beef and 77 barrels of pork
Signed CM Fauntleroy, Acting Master'

Vacancy: stock control operative - maybe

This is very serious. There may be too little horseradish sauce for their beef stocks. However, too much apple sauce for the pork can be turned into pudding. I'm glad that I'm not the cook ;)

So, if they are that far off counting provisions, how accurate is the weather log??? It's not like someone stole some.

Although they have 15 fewer barrels on hand than indicated:
  • On hand, 81+29 = 110
  • On account, 48 + 77 = 125.

So is it poor accounting, or did someone 'liberate' the missing barrels?

Well, the earliest volume of Jamestown specified all sorts of provisions, as time went on the identifications got fewer and in vol 6 there was no entry detailing any purser's stores until shortly after this report. She has now started to account for beef and pork, interestingly she still doesn't account for water but that may be because she's anchored in Rio harbour. I'll keep you posted if she starts to include other stores when she sets sail.

I guess that depends to what "Degree" of accuracy you are looking for.

Haida was called back from Cordova to reach Unalaska 'as soon as possible'. When we get there all we are doing is target practice and building a Tennis court ashore. Big deal.

10 days later they finished the court. Well I assume they did as they left port, or maybe it was because of the job they did they had to leave.
