1860 — While off the Isle of Pines (now named Isla de la Juventud) near the south coast of Cuba, the screw gunboat Wyandotte captures the slaver William, which carries 570 Africans.

1862 – Launch of USS New Ironsides, a wooden-hulled broadside ironclad built for the United States Navy during the American Civil War.

1836 — Congress authorizes the U.S. Exploring Expedition to conduct an exploration of the Pacific Ocean and South Seas, making the first major US scientific expedition overseas. Lt. Charles Wilkes, USN, leads the expedition to survey South America, Antarctica, the Far East, and the North Pacific.

1800 — The frigate USS Essex, commanded by Capt. Edward Preble, arrives in Batavia, Java, to escort United States merchant ships. During her journey, she is the first U.S. Navy warship to cross the Equator and the first U.S. man-of-war to double the Cape of Good Hope.

1802 - The First Battle of Tripoli Harbor was fought on May 16, 1802 in Tripoli Harbor between a combined force
consisting of the American frigate USS Boston and two Swedish Navy frigates against several Tripolitan Barbary corsairs.


1820 - The frigate USS Congress becomes the first U.S. warship to visit China when she visits Guanhzhou (now Canton).

1898 — During the Spanish-American War, boat parties from USS St.Louis and USS Wompatuck, under Capt. Caspar F. Goodrich, cut communication cables at Santiago, Cuba.

1902 — Marines and Sailors from the iron-hulled screw steamer, Ranger go ashore at Panama City, Colombia, to protect US citizen lives and property during an insurrection that results in Panamas eventual independence from Colombia on Nov. 3, 1903.

1882 — Commodore Robert W. Shufeldt, onboard USS Swatara, arrives in Korea to negotiate the first commerce treaty between Korea and a Western power. The treaty is signed on May 22, opening Korea to United States trade.

1918 - A World War I naval engagement between an American armed yacht and a German submarine in the Atlantic Ocean off Spain.

1850 - USS Advance and USS Rescue sail from New York in an attempt to rescue Sir John Franklin's Expedition, lost in the Arctic since 1847.
Caught in the ice and after tremendous hardship, USS Advance returns on Aug. 20, 1851 and USS Rescue returns Sept. 7.
