At 10.40 passed the stripped carcass of a dead whale with birds hovering around it, showing very much like a rock.

From 4 to 6 p.m.
During the watch there appeared in the Wd a strata of umber colored clouds behind a heavy bank of cumulus clouds.

Commences with light wind and cloudy. At 12:30 squally appearance to the Sd and Wd with lightning. Barometer falling and every indication of a blow from SW. ... Corposantos on the yard arm and mastheads. when a violent squall of wind rain and hail struck us from SW ... At 3 squall blown over and nearly calm. At 4 wind freshened from SW.

0400 to 0800
Commenced with strong wind from the Sd and smooth sea. Weather threatening. ... Watch ends with clear weather strong wind and moderate sea.

0800 to 1200
Fresh gales from the SW. weather cloudy with occasional hail squalls. Sea moderate but increasing

1200 to 1600
First part of watch moderate gale from the SW and squally weather. Last part strong breezes from the SW and clear weather. Wind as sea moderating. Passed numerous patches of Kelp.

1600 to 1800
Commences with moderate breeze and heavy swell from the Sd. ... Latter part of the watch wind and sea abating.

1800 to 2000
Throughout the watch pleasant weather.



A corruption of corpo santo, a ball of electric light observed flickering about the masts, yard-arms, and rigging, during heavy rain, thunder, and lightning.
