Shenandoah (1872): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...
Re: Shenandoah (1872): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...
I think you're right. It was a new log keeper that day and he may have started entering the PM data on the wrong row. However, it's not my place to guess what was intended, but rather to just type what I see.
The next day is okay. Must've just been a first day mistake. I hope they keep this log keeper for a while. His handwriting is so easy to read.

July 21
The log keeper did it again. There is an extra row of data above the 1 PM row. As before, I combined that row and 1 PM row on the 1 PM row and added a transcriber comment.
I won't make any more entries here if it continues to occur, but will continue combining the rows and making transcriber comments in the transcription.

OK. I had some other log keeper who kept doing that same thing every few days. Sometimes there would be a blank line farther down the table.

August is complete. Back and forth between England and France, with a couple more deserters along the way.
Re: Shenandoah (1872): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...
Well, perhaps England and France make more tempting locations for desertion than some of the places they have been?

For some reason there is no mention of a gun salute. Seems odd with all the salutes that have occured up to this point.

Maybe the log writer forgot to write it down.

Looks like they didn't know the French Admiral's name. The log just has a long line drawn in place of a name.
