I am thoroughly brain fogged trying to sort out Pioneer's latest trip up to Alaska. She has travelled up the Lama Passage in British Columbia and then references New Bella Bella which is not a current designation. A dip into Wikipedia suggests that the site now designated Old Bella Bella was the original Bella Bella and, when a new settlement was set up across the river, that was New Bella Bella. However, this new site developed and it was decided that it should become Bella Bella and the original site designated Old Bella Bella. I'm not sure when the official name change occurred but it could be a source of confusion to people editing early Coast Guard logs.

Yeah, these cases are quite tricky unless the Old one is very old or the New one very recent. One needs to check elsewhere (on wiki or other sources) when the New place has been created or changed its name.

Unfortunately there are few maps for the specific area available online, the only thing we can check are pilot guides and other printed material but it's always a slow process going through them.
The volume 2 of 1920 British Columbia Pilot (i already posted Volume 1 in the Pioneer thread) mention the "New Bella Bella Village".. it does not say anything about the other, but should have been named, as we've read in the wiki, Bella Bella. I think this book mention could be the closer available reference to your case.

In the db i've added New Bella Bella as an alias to the current Bella Bella (actual town) which we already had, and added the missing Old Bella Bella place with an alias "Bella Bella" to it. This will cover all occurrences, but the reader (and/or the editor) will have to ultimately decide which one the log is referring to in case just Bella Bella is used.

I think identifying the geographic coordinates is probably the most important when reading the log. I put in brief explanations in a footnote such as this one

New Bella Bella is now indexed as Bella Bella in British Columbia at Lat 52.16, Long -128.14, it was originally called New Bella Bella to distinguish it from the original Bella Bella which is now designated as Old Bella Bella.
- Bella Bella and Old Bella Bella have links to the relevant current geograhic citation. New Bella Bella refers to the log entry. All such entries in footnotes are marked in bold even if a link is provided. I hope the reader who is sufficiently interested will pick up the convention without lengthy explanations.
I suspect that there was a significant period when both naming conventions were used by different groups of people. I suspect that the population of both places was then small enough for people like postmen to know inhabitants by name and deliver to the right settlement.

"Bellabella (Post Office, settlement, steamer landing & cannery)" adopted in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, situated on the NW side of Denny Island. Form of name changed to Bella Bella (Post Office & steamer landing) 14 June 1946 on 103SE, and re-confirmed as a Post Office 4 September 1952. Form of name changed to Bella Bella (community) 15 December 1982. Band Manager and RCMP advised February 1991 that "Old" Bella Bella is now the established name for the original community site on the northwest side of Denny Island, although nothing remains there now except a BC Fish Packers facility. Name changed to Old Bella Bella (community) 22 February 1991 on 103A/1.

Bella Bella Post Office was opened on the northwest side of Denny Island 1 September 1884, and closed in this location 14 April 1920. Bella Bella Post Office was re-opened 1 September 1920, located across Lama Passage on the east side of Campbell Island at the settlement of New Bella Bella. Bella Bella Post Office moved back to the northwest side of Denny Island (possibly at the same time that Campbell Island Post Office was opened on L1105, 1 October 1936?). Bella Bella Post Office continued to operate for many years out of the BC Packers building, Lot 181, at the northwest side of Denny Island, according to March 1970 advice from postmaster. By 1988 the Bella Bella Post Office had been relocated from Lot 181 eastward about 1 mile to the settlement at Shearwater.
