It seems that Lytton, B. C., which set the record maximum temperature for Canada the other day had a major forest fire move into the town yesterday afternoon. The video from the CBC National News is at the bottom of the article.

Like in ‘Postapocalyptic Movies’: Heat Wave Killed Marine Wildlife en Masse

The combination of extraordinary heat and drought that hit the Western United States and Canada over the past two weeks has killed hundreds of millions of marine animals and continues to threaten untold species in freshwater, according to a preliminary estimate and interviews with scientists.

Good heavens, a lovely summer's day up here in Glasgow! Sunshine all day & about 23 C which is nice, more cloud but still warm and dry over the next few days. So, I went and picked some more gooseberries at our local pick-your-own. Their raspberries are over although the wild ones haven't ripened yet. Our Covid rate is still high but beginning to fall again so fingers crossed, especially now the Euro football is over and they are still restricting numbers at the pre-league practice football matches. I do fancy getting out and about a bit in this lovely weather but I'm still avoiding crowds until the definitive results on vaccines and the delta variant are in.

Picking gooseberries on a fine summer's day - wonderful!

I'm avoiding as many people as possible and wearing my mask as ever. Oxford is the most infected town in the South just now. I wouldn't go in there for a King's ransom. The University sent out a message that they are not going to require people to come into to work and that restrictions to our building are as tight as ever.

For those of us coping with mad heat levels - a cooling scene from Penguin Watch. Sadly the whereabouts are (as yet) unknown. It's simply designated as COPa. Antarctic Peninsula I should think. All the jumbly stuff in the middle is sea ice.

Having a heatwave in the UK this week. Although after the temperatures in the Pacific NW recently I don't think it would count as a heatwave everywhere! Northern Island broke the record for its highest temperature ever with 31.4C.

The max temp each day here has been gradually increasing until it got to 30.5C yesterday in my garden (in the shade!). Supposed to be cooler today, predicted max 25C, then back to more normal temps (about 20C) from Saturday. Phew!

On 7 September, 1986, Victoria International Airport received a trace of rain. This ended a spell of 52 days with no precipitation, the longest dry stretch for Victoria. We have not had any rain here since June 14, when we had 0.2 mm. The long range forecast has 7 mm for Friday, August 6. If the forecast holds true, we will tie the 52 day record with no rain. If there is no rain on or before August 6, we will break that record.

I check each forecast with bated breath.

I just checked Esquimalt, which has records from 1872 to 1950. Their longest dry spell was 63 days and ended on 1926-08-15. The International Airport has records back just to 1940.
