Stuart was wondering if he could see where our ships have been. I took a few minutes to generate a KML file of the unique noon positions for our ships done up to the end of 2024. There are 8,163 unique noon positions showing on the Google Earth display. You need to download the KML file in order to view it. There are two ways to view it.

I use the Google Earth Pro program, which is free. You just click on File/Open and select the downloaded KML file.

If you don't have or don't want the Google Earth Pro app, you can try using the Google Earth Web application. You have to go to File/Open Local KML File or just do a Ctrl+I, and enter your downloaded KML file.

I do not know if you have to be logged into Google to use this online app. Once you get the map up, you might want to go to View/Layers and delete everything except Clean and Satellite. You can also click the little < icon by the white area on the left of the screen to remove that feature. You can also do View/Hide Menu Bar, which gives you a larger display area. I could not see how to make the view area full screen.

With either app, you can rotate the display and zoom in and out. You can click on an icon and it will bring up a display of the ship's name and the year.

This is the view with Google Earth Web:

I had to use unique noon positions for the display. We have over 1,700,000 positions, and almost 75,000 positions for noon. Selecting just unique noon positions got that total down to 8,163.

Enjoy the fruits of your labours!!!

Nice one Michael. :D :D :D

I needed access permission to get the KML file. Please grant me permission.

Now get back to the logs for this years map. :D :D
I changed the permission. This is the link again.

Just slaving away off the coast of Mexico!

Also: A History of Regulations in the United States Navy
Art 3 of the 1775 version
ART. 3. If any shall be heard to swear, curse or blaspheme the name of God, the Captain is strictly enjoined to punish them for every offence, by causing them to wear a wooden collar or some other shameful badge of distinction, for so long a time as he shall judge proper:-- If he be a commissioned officer he shall forfeit one shilling for each offence, and a warrant or inferior officer, six-pence: He who is guilty of drunkenness (if a seaman) shall be put in irons until he is sober, but if an officer, he shall forfeit two days pay.

The History makes interesting reading.
Thanks :D

Happy Birthday, Morgan!

Are you OK because of the fires? I think they're north of you, but I'm sure you're getting a lot of smoke. I hope you're all right.

Happy Birthday Michael. And a year of health and prosperity to you.

Thank you all for the gorgeous cake, the tea and wishes! (Thank you, Stuart for limiting the candles on the cake- we have enough fire issues here is it is.

Just a note on the fires- great areal picture, by the way. BR (Before Retirement) I worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and sat in the City Emergency Ops Center in times like this. Good time to be retired. We had a rainy winter a year ago- lots of brush growth. We have not had measureable rain in over 6 months. Ontop of that- we had 60+mph gusts of wind. Ordinarily they would have fought it with copters and fixed wing planes but they couldn't go up with the winds. They have relatively new night vision equipment to go up at night. THings got out of hand quickly. The burn areas are steep and wooded. Because of the winds they issued wide evacuations. The wind has switched today- less, and blowing in our direction. We are getting lots of smoke, ,but the fire is about 30 miles away. We had been to the Palasades fire area at Thanksgiving. Everyone knows someone impacted one way or another. My heart goes out to them.

Glad to hear you're not in the burn zone, Morgan! I hope you've got enough protection against the smoke and are doing okay (relatively speaking). I knew generally that things had been very dry and windy, but I didn't know about the burst of brush growth. Thanks for sharing your expertise (and now I know a new fact about Morgan!)

Thank you one and all. It has been a good day, even if I had to go to the gym for my exercise class!

I've had so many birthdays, they all seem rather much the same, but I'm still open to have a few more...
