I was fortunate early in my career to get the opportunity to work in the computer lab aboard a US Geological Survey ship, the RV S.P. Lee. We were doing geophysical research near Hawaii, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands. The ship had sound sources that would go off at regular intervals and a cable roughly a mile long with microphones recorded the sounds reflected by the rock layers below the ocean.

I was responsible for recording the data and controlling the depth of the cable, trying to keep it at a constant depth and as level as possible.

Unfortunately, my bunk was right next to one of the sound sources. It was called the "Clapper" because it would strike the side of the ship to create a high frequency sound.

I happened to be on watch when we discovered a previously unknown underground volcano. We also passed very close to another volcano, Tinakula, which was erupting at that time. Rocks were landing in the water near the ship and about 10 minutes after we passed, a huge ash cloud came down where the ship had been 10 minutes earlier.

The avatar in my messages is a photo of the S.P. Lee in Antarctica. However, I was not aboard the ship at that time.
