Cool maps, Michael. I'm over in the west, so looks like I'll miss most of the snow. There are lots of Met Office weather warnings for the next few days but none of them where I am. Perhaps I shouldn't tempt fate!

OK - a little bit of transcribed weather which has cheered me up because a bit of a windy chill in Kidlington is NOT this....
The John Carver is heading down the coast of Argentina at 39 08 S 51 28 W
It's the
24th November 1884 and the weather begins the day (at midnight) like this:
Blowing a fresh gale from the SSW weather very bad squalls of hail and snow with thunder and lightening
Once again the old saying proves true - worse things happen at sea.
(in an amazing illustration of sang froid the PM entry for that day says 'Blowing a moderate gale with
pleasant weather'. I guess it's all comparative
)

It looks like the white stuff is in store for us this evening, although it might not be around for long...

Across Puget Sound here in Kent 3 - 7 inches of snow is forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Last night the first real snow of the season fell, but it was just a very light dusting. A couple months ago there was a little snow mixed with mostly rain.

There was so much ice on my steps (from runoff above) that salt was not very helpful.
So I poured several buckets of warm (not hot - afraid of doing damage with too violent a temperature change) water on the ice.
That worked quite well. Then I swept the steps to get rid of as much of the water and remaining ice as possible and put some salt on the problem areas.

Randi - great idea - I guess it worked well?
Gordon - snorkel up - with a wind like that, and that much snow, you'll get some fun drifting I guess?
Bitterly cold here tonight. Heading down to -8C apparently. just grateful not to be in Braemar which enjoyed -22C on Wednesday night.

I think you need to re-define your temperature of -8. Bitterly cold does not do it.

Michael, I like the warning that new swimmers should have someone (spotter) with them. Yep, seem like a good idea to me.
I do believe it would change my mood. Oh, and I am not a good swimmer in good conditions.

I've been watching CNN live and just saw the very early morning national weather report. OUCH! It would up with a screen saying that, over the weekend, they expect to have over 100 record low temperatures for this time of year. Somewhere (I think Sioux Falls?) was at -48C. 6 inches of snow for Dallas, Texas etc. Thermals on, all of you across the Pond

We got 19 cm of snow overnight (as of 7: AM) and it's still snowing. It's windy with a temperature now, 8:45, of -1.4. More snow to come, changing to rain later on Sunday. It will be very sloppy.

It snowed all night and by the time this is over it looks like it will be the heaviest snowfall since I've lived at this house (23 years). As of 10 AM there was 178 mm (7 inches) of snow on the ground with another 2 to 5 inches forecast yet today. The low last night was -3.9 C and the peak wind was 30 km/h. That's the lowest temperature and strongest wind recorded since I installed my weather station a few years ago.
Currently there is heavy snow with a slight breeze and the temperature is up to 0 C.

Looks lovely, but for me best viewed from a warm room through double (or triple) glazing. We've got the trampled after effects of a couple of inches in the village. Thaw sets in tomorow.
