My goodness - Northwich looks to be in a terrible state. In the middle of the night, dangerous and filthy water swilling everywhere, then snow, and during a pandemic. Grim - I wish them much luck. :)

jil I was surprised by the reduced number of warnings this morning too. There was at least one severe warning but it didn't appear on the list. Seemed to be something a bit odd with their web pages. :(

Perhaps they had put so many on the system it broke!

More white stuff falling from the sky this morning: hail, sleet and now the proper fluffy stuff.

We had just a light dusting of snow overnight.
The high today is supposed to be -3C.

They are calling for snow, but the model suggests it will be rain for us in Victoria, Greater Vancouver and Duncan. I generated these images using CMC's GRIB data and an algorithm for determining whether precipitation would land as Rain (Green) or Snow (White). There are potentially 326,000 data points in the white square, but I had to extract just every tenth of them so Google Earth didn't grind to a total halt. ;)

Randi- I have been worried about you. The national forecast says the east coast gets clobbered every night! Our big storm resulted in 0.9 inch of rain in Long Beach. Not all that much, but every little bit helps.
Stay warm.

Thank you!
So far, cold, but not much rain or snow here.
I live in a house built in the 1890s that was divided into five apartments. It still has the old steam radiators, although the boiler is new, and they do a great job. Double-paned windows also help. Last fall, when they first turned the heating system on, it shut off. I called the owner and a nice young man came out. The next day the heat was off again. I called the owner and an older, slightly grumpy man came out. He wondered around, spent a fair bit of time on the phone, left, and returned. Luckily, the coldest my apartment got was about 65F. No problems since!

AH! Steam heat. I remember that from grade school. The radiators would pop and sizzle; very cozy. After recess we put our wet gloves on the radiators to dry. Nothing smells like wet, roasting wool mittens. The crazy things to remember.

We had snow today - big flurries of big snow flakes. It didn't lay though. But it was exciting. :)

For you people living with Boris and Nicola, this is for you. Rain is green, snow is white. :D The earthquake is an artifact of Google Earth.

Thank you, I'm 'subject' to Nicola. We've got rain although the higher ground I can see from my bedroom windows is white. I'm over on the West and I think the worst of our weather is over to the East. We rarely get thick lying snow although I can remember some in the 70s and 80s but it rarely lasted for more than a few days. My personal theory is a combination of the Gulf Stream and LOTS of water.

The images don't give any indication of amounts. However, the KML files have the data which can be viewed in Google Earth by clicking on a button:

Image

I can also generate a point forecast for any point on the globe. All I need are the coordinates for the location.

My scripts will download and extract the data with virtually no input from me, other than having to start them up. Generating the images must be done manually, although I have an AutoHotkey to load the KML file into Google Earth, and another to enter the date time for the map and then save the image. It is rather fun, but I do this only on occasion.

If I were more skilled, I would write a program to plot the data on a map image and then the whole system could run more or less automatically. Then I would have dots for the full map area and I could go out to Hour 240 instead of just 72.

Cheers Michael! :D The last set of data proved very close to true. We've seen predictions of lots of snow, but I doubted it would make it to us as the Chilterns shadow us from Beasts from the East. And your data show this. A few flurries for Kidlington. ;)

Cool maps, Michael. I'm over in the west, so looks like I'll miss most of the snow. There are lots of Met Office weather warnings for the next few days but none of them where I am. Perhaps I shouldn't tempt fate!

OK - a little bit of transcribed weather which has cheered me up because a bit of a windy chill in Kidlington is NOT this....

The John Carver is heading down the coast of Argentina at 39 08 S 51 28 W
It's the 24th November 1884 and the weather begins the day (at midnight) like this:

Blowing a fresh gale from the SSW weather very bad squalls of hail and snow with thunder and lightening

Image

Once again the old saying proves true - worse things happen at sea. ;) :o

(in an amazing illustration of sang froid the PM entry for that day says 'Blowing a moderate gale with pleasant weather'. I guess it's all comparative  )
