OW'er gets interrupted by really bad news from Real Life.
This recently happened to me: About a month ago, I was told I was being let go from work at the end of June!
This was not because I did anything wrong, but for economic reasons: The company is not doing so well financially, and I am one of the youngest developers and have no dependents, so I got sacked (and at least one other person around the same age).
Fortunately, I was able to start looking immediately, and have already found something new! It's with
https://easy-software.com/en/software/m ... -services/, a nice looking place in the middle of Leipzig.
They look really good and interesting, I had a very nice impression after interviewing there.
I'll be starting on August 19th - that is a bit late due to some already-planned-and-booked USA trips, but they were very understanding about that.
This does mean I will be unemployed for seven weeks, but I am already sorting that out: My health insurance will not be affected, as this is Germany, and I can apply online for unemployment benefits. No need to go to the offices in person.
This has been quite the stressful thing for me, but now that it's all settled, I feel like it might actually be more good than bad. I was getting bored at my current company due to not always having enough to do, and not getting to join any new projects despite asking people. Also, the organization at my current company is not very good - people often get shuffled between different projects without prior warning, and last month one of the project managers went on vacation without properly handing things over - that caused quite a bit of frustration among my colleagues!
Plus, I will have a slightly higher salary than now, and maybe be able to work 35 hours a week instead of 40! The last one is really good, as I am doing alright financially, but would love to have some more spare time.
I even managed to extend my first US trip, to New Jersey, from two to three-and-a-half weeks since I have no job to return too!
So yeah, now that I know where I'll be going, I can relax a bit, settle the few remaining things at the old job in my last five days there (If you are the only person to know so much it takes you twelve hours of meetings to explain it all, something is very wrong with your company's organization!), and look forward to the NJ trip - I fly next Sunday, with Mom and siblings. Gonna be good!

I'm so sorry to hear that your first job folded, but it says a great deal about your skills and personality that you landed your next job so quickly
! This must have made your birthday quite interesting
. But now, as you say, you can go on holiday and really relax and enjoy more time with your folks
So how about this for your next picture?

But unlike Napoleon, I do not intend to end my career with banishment to St. Helena for the rest of my life
OW'er enjoying a well-deserved vacation.
That's me alright, except for the gender - tomorrow morning, I fly to New Jersey.
Because of that, I will be taking a break from the Dockside Gallery until July 20th. If anybody else wants to post stuff here in the meantime, they are most welcome to

OW'er goes hiking in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington, during which he finds many places mentioned in the US logs.
That's me alright, minus the cigarette - tomorrow morning, I will be going to Oregon and Washington with my dad and older brother. We're gonna see family in Portland, then go hiking in the Olympic Peninsula.
However, we may not always have Internet access, so I will be taking a complete break from OW until we get back on the 17th.
I will see about finding places mentioned in the US logs (Point No Point is one I would very much like to visit in person!), but I can't guarantee anything, as it is not a big priority for us.
If anybody else wants to post stuff in the Dockside Gallery while I'm gone, they are welcome to do so.

In the late 21st century, a veteran OWer's grandson is astonished to hear there was a time when computers couldn't read and transcribe old handwriting, and had to be helped out by humans.
Such a thing is inconceivable to the young laddie, who has only ever known superintelligent quantum computers.
