1200h The annual Nagasaki Regatta took place. Ashuelot (being the Judges' Stand) was visited by a large number of people to witness the races. Our launch pulled by our sailors, and the USS Onwards' launch pulled by our firemen and coalheavers. We won a first prize and two second prizes.

0800h Found that Alfred H Insey (Seaman) was absent from the ship without permission. Sent a description list of him to the US Marshal and offered a reward of Ten Dollars for his delivery on board.

1720h the PMS Ship Costa Rica arrived from Yokohama bringing the US Mails and J Ross Brown American Minister to China. Received a visit of courtesy from the Minister and Suite, saluted him with 17 guns with American flag at the fore
