Thanks for your sympathy.
Two men appeared at 8.40, one went up the loft, the other on the roof and they confirmed that indeed it was the seal round the chimney. So, they took lots of photos and went away, I am now awaiting quote and date. Date will be subject to weather but they don't need access to the inside of the house so it won't interfere with any plans I have. I'll just have to warn the neighbours. It's been dry today and should be dry over the weekend so at least no more water should get in.

Since the garages are catching up with MOTs I think I'd better book my car in before too long. If I think about it for a few minutes I've no doubt I can find other things to organise which have been put off over Covid but I think tea is called for first.

Chimney now fixed, fingers crossed, because today is supposed to be wet. So, I still have the bowl under the spot where the water was dripping but hope to go and visit my brother without worrying about any drips. Had a covid scare last night. Our Health Board, which covers a pretty large area, was reporting high numbers of cases and warnings were being broadcast. Anyway, some areas covered by the board have started to increase precautions but not mine. So my short break away is still OK, off tomorrow for just under 2 weeks, may drop in from time to time but attention moving to Roman remains and medieval castles.

We may get the chance to see a recently unearthed Roman Christian relic at a place called Vindolanda. It's a fragmented lead chalice covered in Christion iconographic graffiti. I suspect that, unless the lighting is superb, it will not look very exciting as the graffiti is fairly lightly scratched but it is one of the earliest christian pieces found in N Britain and validates the identification of its find site as an early church in the civilian settlement adjacent to the fort.

Smoke has started moving into the area from the fires in California and Oregon; and a few fires up here in Washington too.

So far it's not bad but I'm concerned with a stretch of hot weather coming up. I grew up in California and smoke from the fires never bothered me, but now as a senior citizen I become rather ill if the smoke gets too bad. A few years ago it became so bad that I had to retreat to my bedroom, close all the doors and windows (despite very hot weather) and run a fan with a filter attached to continually clean the air in the room. If I stepped out of the room I quickly felt ill.

Lots of smoke this morning. Red skies and stinky air as smoke from the fires in eastern Washington State moves into our area. The Air Quality Index at the station a couple of kilometers from here is 161, which is very much in the red.

The smoke was terrible here last night. It was making me feel quite ill. It has cleared out for now, but winds from the east are forecast for today which will likely bring in more smoke from Eastern Washington. Besides the fires in Eastern Washington, that part of the state was already blanketed by smoke that had blown up from fires in Oregon and California. Now it's coming our way.

The smoke situation here deteriorated quite rapidly last night. A big brush fire started at the south end of our valley just as the smoke from Eastern Washington was arriving. The result was the Air Quality Index jumped from 12 to 153 in an hour. It peaked at 171 a few hours later.

Currently the smoke has moved up to Seattle and over towards Michael in Victoria, but the index here is back down to 26 and I can breath again.

This part of the state is under a red flag alert for hazardous fire conditions because everything is quite dry, and wind, high temperatures and low humidity are forecast for the next few days.

I hope that you are OK Gordon! We saw the most dramatic pictures on the news today. I can't handle it...too awful for words.

You could do with some of Randi's 'blowing great guns and small arms' weather to fetch hurricanes and wash out the fires

The situation is getting worse here, but nothing like down in California and Oregon. I live on the west side of the Cascade Mountains where it tends to be moist enough that wildfires are rare.

However, it has been so hot, dry and windy that there are even fires burning around here now too, some of them within a few miles. A few homes have burned and there have been intermittent freeway closures. The immediate area where I live should be safe from fire, but the smoke is getting bad.

The state just issued an emergency alert for the Puget Sound area advising people to get out and get any essentials they may need now because what they describe as "a super-massive" smoke plume is headed our way and it will be too unhealthy for anyone to be outside tomorrow.

The heat yesterday and today is making it more unbearable. The high yesterday was 34. It is currently 34 and expected to get a little warmer yet. At least tomorrow is supposed to be much cooler.
