Trieste did indeed changed hands in 1918. It was the only major port of Austro-Hungarian empire, with the creation of the state of Italy in 1866, since a big part of its inhabitants were Italians, it became a political claim along with other areas controlled by Austria. It became officially part of Italy after WWI ended in 1918.
