We captured two prizes and we didn't get back to port until very late, so we slept in.
And, I wish that the person entering the wind directions had slept later yet!

An earlier insert:

Navy Department
April 10th 1863

Sir,

Admiral Sir Alexander Milne Commanding H.B.M. forces on the coast of North America and West Indies has Complained through the British Minister of Discourtesy in Sundry Instances by our Commanders in firing a shot across the bows of the vessels instead of a Blank Cartridge. It has been stated in reply that this apparent Discourtesy was doubtless in consequence of the great vigilance of our Officers in having all their Guns shotted while on Belligerent duty and from no want of Comity, But In order to preserve friendly feelings it is suggested that it
would be well, as a Rule to have One small Gun loaded with Blank Cartridge to be used by day, as preparatory Signal of Warning in accordance with the usage of the Sea Service. A vessel approaching the blockade at night without making the usual signals, is not Entitled to any of the Courtesies of the sea.

I am Respecfully etc
Gideon Welles,
Secretary of Navy
