q for squalls. You can see his wind speed 3-5.
Re: Yantic (1881): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...
At 1500 I would guess bq. The events page does mention squalls.

Good Evening Randi, (from a very sunny and hot Australian morning.) You can look forward to a nice Saturday.
All other q's have been closed loop which threw me with the open loop.
I don't think one letter will change the climate predictions to much so I will put q.

More of those double number wind force like 5.8, 7.7, 7.7, 4.7
and a 2.3.4 entry on next page.
and a 2.3.4 entry on next page.
Re: Yantic (1881): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...
The log keeper is just too lazy to use a -. So, 2.3 should be entered as 2-3.
Re: Yantic (1881): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...
One of the log keepers on my current Shenandoah log did the same thing, using periods instead of dashes for wind force. I transcribed them as dashes since that was clearly what was intended and I was concerned that there might be a problem processing the data if I used periods.

Yes. 2.4 means 2-4.
So, what does 2.4 mean? Is it 4/10 of the way between 2 and 3? I don't think so.
I checked with the science team and they want 2-4 to be (5+14)/2 = 9.5 => 10. When you think that these wind speeds are just estimated, you can understand that it's like horseshoes and nukes. Close is good enough.
Code | Description | Range | Mean |
2 | Light breeze | 4–6 knots | 5 |
3 | Gentle breeze | 7–10 knots | 8 |
4 | Moderate breeze | 11–16 knots | 14 |

You are all missing my point.
It's not the entrys with different numbers with a . between that's puzzling me, it's what something like 7.7 means.
See 6 and 7 am. entrys
Also 8pm 2.3.4 why not 2.4?
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 7_0193.JPG
Whilst I am at it, any suggestions for wind dir ar 0900 on this page?

Random guess: The wind went from 7 to 6 or 8, and then back to 7, all within one hour.pommystuart wrote: ↑Sun Nov 13, 2022 2:22 am You are all missing my point.

2.3.4 was a case where the wind was 3 for a significant period of time, and didn't just jump straight from 2 to 4.
Looks like W to me (both 9 AM and 9 PM), as it's the same shape as the first W in WSW for wind dir at 5 PM.pommystuart wrote: ↑Sun Nov 13, 2022 2:22 am Whilst I am at it, any suggestions for wind dir ar 0900 on this page?

I agree with Hanibal about the numbers, and probably the wind wind direction. Legibility was not your man's strong point!

Good job! I'll get to it shortly.
Re: Yantic (1881): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...
It's interesting to me to see how various places were called. On 18 February, we were in Halifax, Nova Scotia, British Province. On the 19th, we were in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I think the use of Canada by the log keeper was just his own idea. There was no country called Canada until July 1, 1867.
Canada wasn't applied to Nova Scotia until Confederation. Nova Scotia was part of the French Colony of Acadia. It was also called Annapolis Royal for a while. The British Province/colony called Canada was split in 1791 into Upper and Lower Canada, with Upper Canada referring to parts of what is now the province of Ontario. The name Ontario was given to these lands at Confederation.

Between 1534 and 1763, Quebec was called Canada and was the most developed colony in New France. Following the Seven Years' War, Quebec became a British colony: first as the Province of Quebec (1763–1791), then Lower Canada (1791–1841), and lastly Canada East (1841–1867), as a result of the Lower Canada Rebellion. It was confederated with Ontario, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick in 1867, beginning the Dominion of Canada.

However, you are presently in 1881, so there would be a Canada
