The log keeper on the Shenandoah for most of 1873 tended to write with a lot of flourish, especially his Fs and Ms. However, he exceeded even his most extreme flourishness on November 5. Zoom in on the event page to get a real sense of just how extreme it is.

Wow! He aimed to impress, didn’t he?

I don’t know that much about how the logs were kept. Do you think it was the handwriting of R.S. Evans?

From what I have read, his job is to certify that this is a correct copy of the rough/deck log.

In the second column it says: The Smooth Log Book is to be a correct certified copy of the Rough Log.

Happy Birthday- and the whole year, for that matter! With a cake like that, who couldn't help but smile.
Best regards,

Hi all,

ellenbaum pointed this out to me today: An NPR interview about a whaling logbook project at New Bedford/Woods Hole that is almost exactly what we're doing. No mention of Old Weather, though. Does somebody know UMass professor Dr. Timothy Walker?

So, as the whaling logbook person I immediately listened to this.

I haven't heard of this, actually. It's entirely possible they came up with this idea independently (why not?) but I find it somewhat unlikely since he works with New Bedford that he doesn't know about us. I'll drop a line to Walker to let him know about our parallel work and have a chat. Maybe Woods Hole is interested in our data, too.

I AM awfully curious why we didn't get mentioned, though, since we are featured on the New Bedford Whaling Museum website and I have spoken to someone there in the last few months.
