Today's Squaredle is dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the establishment of the rank of Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy on April 1, 1893. 😁

03/31

(You find out about the anniversary if you solve the Bonus Word of the Day. Starts with VA--, four letters, connected with sailing ...)

Thanks, Caro. I'd solved the bonus word but then didn't read the info, so now I know why 'Navy' was the first word I spotted in the puzzle!

Well done, Janet. :) I found the puzzle quite difficult today; and I had 13 bonus words!

With all the current AI hype, I thought I'd give it a go myself.

I asked it to analyse the logs of a ship we haven't transcribed or edited yet, to make sure it wouldn't use 'our' data, and present the weather observations in tabular and graphical form, and mark where it thinks the log-keeper made a mistake, or where instruments were probably misread, and correct it to the more likely value.

I also asked to add the remarks pages in textual form.
And, as cherry on the cake, plot the positions on a map, correlating landmarks with contemporary maps.

I was sceptical to start with, but actually am bowled over by the result.
I'm sure you'll agree, it's just nothing short of spectacular.

Following the link below to see the result for yourself, and be awed.

Does this mean transcribers and editors will be obsolete soon? :?

Randi, I have wondered how you were fairing with the springtime storms. A house we own in central Illinois has hail damage - western screen shredded- can't see the roof from the west coast. And daughter in Oakland had 7 inches of water in their basement because their power was off for a day, All in all, no one is hurt, everything can be easily fixed- which I know is not the case everywhere. Stay safe.

Thanks for your concern!
Luckily, it was no more than a minor annoyance for me.
I had daylight to read by and the heating system is gas.

It sounds like you and your family had a worse time.

I was wondering if their noses would be like the tower in Stuart's circle, but I suspect the petals don't have quite the right angle to reflect all the sun's rays onto their faces :D
