Not just windy at sea in the UK and Ireland - red warnings issued by Met Office and Met Eireann

I'm in NW England where we're under the Amber warning for wind, so hopefully not going to be too bad here. Currently the local weather forecast is predicting gusts up to 61mph, which is better than yesterday's forecast which was showing gusts up to 71mph!

Up here near to Glasgow Airport we are red most of tomorrow and into Saturday overnight then down to amber. Did the weekend shop today and planning to make a flask of tea before I go to bed tonight - just in case. I think the drawbacks of VOIP phones may be demonstrated - if the power goes off so does the phone, while the old landlines carry their own supplies - from a longlasting generator if the grid is down (unless of course they have discontinued the safety measure to save money !!!). Got an email from the NHS, all routine appointments are off and will be re-scheduled. A&E will still be open. From my experience at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after my hip replacement getting in to the main entrance could be exciting, the lab across the service road makes it into a wind tunnel. {They also put the emergency helipad on top of a 12 storey building situated into an E-W ish Clyde Valley. They've modified it recently but I suspect they'll be landing on the Thales pad by the river and doing the last few hundred yards by ambulance. I believe they call it planning!!! Anyway I've got plenty of batteries for the radio and a fair selection of torches with a gas fire in the lounge so I have a warm roon during the day then quick change in the lounge and straight into bed (no hot water bottle though!!!), takes me back to my childhood when the only heat was in the lounge - quick wash and get undressed/dressed under the bedclothes.

Tut, tut Stuart. I'm in Scotland, here they drink Whisky only across the pond do they drink Whiskey (I don't like either but I think there is some Ginger wine in the cupboard). At the moment all is quiet. If the power is on in the morning, the wind isn't supposed to peak till about lunchtime, then I might make up a small flask of coffee and dig out the rum - my small flask doesn't hold the heat as well but it will stay hot until tea time anyway. If I believed in some of the superstitions then that should ensure the power stays on but if it doesn't then I'll just drink up and wait until it comes back. There isn't much more I can do anyway - I'm certainly not fit enough to do much in the way of major clearing up these days.

From BBC news

A core of very powerful winds are now battering the west coast of the Republic of Ireland, where a gust of 114mph (183km/h) was recorded at Mace Head at 05:00 GMT.

This makes it the strongest recorded gust of wind in Ireland, exceeding the previous record set in 1961 during Hurricane Debbie.

The wind is really starting to ramp up in Northern Ireland now as well. Kilowen, County Down has recorded a gust of 92mph at 06:00 GMT.

Not that bad here, although the forecast is back to predicting gusts up to 71mph in the next few hours.

Still got power (2pm). At least one wheelie bin blown over and getting some stones (probably from the pebble dash) getting blown on to the bedroom windows but none cracked so far. We're now at the peak of the storm according to the Met Office so should start to ease off in an hour or so (gusts only 50mph+ rather that 70mph+). I hope this isn't the start of a trend. We always get some gales in the autumn but this is worse but mitigated by the fact that the deciduous treas have lost all their leaves so cope better than in the autumn when you have the remaining leaves interacting with the wind.

Glad yu are all so well prepared. We are used to hearing your forecasts by way of old comedy programs where channel crossing forecasts are read. I smiled at the reminder of leaving my clothes out within reach the night before so that I could dress under my blankets in the morning. Stay safe.

Finally! It rained! My gauge said 1/4 inch, the airport near us got 1/2 inch. Either is more than the sum total we have had since last April. Its enough to dampen down the fires for a while. Also enough for weeds but not yet enough for my fruit trees and flowers. Can't have everything.
