High today was 36. Forecast is for a little warmer tomorrow.

It was 30.9 here, and it's forecast to be a bit hotter today.

Global warming has not reached Glasgow. After a pleasant spring summer is cool and WET. I had the heating on the other morning - temp 60F in living room, 62F in bedroom. Something to do with the jet stream according to the met people - does anyone know if global warming affects the jet stream? If it does my CO2 output could go up as the earth warms up because I'm not zero CO2 and the summer temperatures could be too low for elderly comfort. It also gets harder to dry washing out of doors if we have so few dry days, temptation to tumble dry or put on heating. I remember opening up the hatch to the loft because the house felt too hot in the old days when they weren't going on about global warming, now I'm thinking about year round heating.

Global warming does affect the jet stream! It gets weaker, especially in the summer. The jet stream is driven by the differences in temperatures between the equator and the poles. The areas near the poles are warming much faster than the areas near the equator, so that temperature difference is getting smaller. The jet stream is stronger in the winter, because those temperature differences are much greater than they were in the summer. However, the jet stream in winter is weaker than it was many years ago.

You can think of the jet stream as a conveyor belt, moving synoptic features like storms and high pressures along. As the jet stream gets weaker, these synoptic features move more slowly, so spells of hot, cold, wet or dry weather stick around for a longer time.

You can think of the jet stream as a wave that circles the earth with peaks in one area and troughs in another. In the summer, there are usually four or five of these waves, with six or seven in the winter. So, with four waves around the globe, the wavelength is about 90 degrees of longitude. So, if you're under a trough, you're getting cold wet weather. And, people half a wavelength away, which is about 45 degrees of longitude, are getting hot dry weather. So, for me, when we are cool and damp, our girl in Toronto is dying of the heat. We are at 123 degrees West, and she is at 79 degrees West.

It is, of course, much more complicated, but that is the general picture.

Michael, Thanks for the explanation. I've got a much better picture of it now.

Thank you, well we may not get overall colder summers but if we get a cool spell it is likely to last longer (warmer spells too of course but we tend to remember the cooler ones more.) Moral: do not pack away all your winter warmer clothing - if you get a cool spell the house will cool down before it is over and you will NEED some warmer clothing unless you want to spend a fortune on heating and then feel guilty about the carbon dioxide you are releasing.

I know the other side of your guilty feeling; I am trying not to turn on the AC. Opening and closing windows depending on time of day and direction of sun. We drove up north through California's Central Valley in 41.7 C yesterday. We were heading to the Bay Area- so it was cooling when we got here. Take care everyone.

I don't know how we do it. We even had two days of rain in July, 5 mm one day, and 2 on the day following!!!

Cooler air should gradually erode the heat across South Australia and Victoria from Wednesday to Friday, then sweep into New South Wales and the central interior by next Saturday.

The polar air mass is too far ahead for a precise forecast of the severity of the cold snap, however the system has the potential to rival the icy blasts from July.

July and the beginning of August were abnormally warm (apartment repeatedly got up to 85F), the second half of August has been abnormally cool (apartment currently 72F).

Please send a few of your extra therms over to any transcribers in Scotland, my bedroom was at 65 and my downstairs living room at 60 when I got up this morning.

It's been hovering around this for the last few days. Most years I am considering opening the hatch into the loft to allow the heat to rise, this 'summer' I have been wondering whether to have a hot water bottle and reminding myself of my childhood when we weren't allowed to switch on the central heating in school until Oct 1 and it had to go off on May 1 irrespective of the thermometer reading (only hospitals were exempt).

Apparently they are having a heatwave in SE England just to turn us a deeper shade of green.
