WINDY here. We had two very brief (a couple of minutes) power outages.
Fortunately not too cold.

Lovely weather in my part of the world. Yesterday 0900 to 0900, Max 37.3C, Min 19.4. Humidity 23% to 91%
Had a shower last night, [I mean a shower of rain
7mm in 20 min]. Saved me watering my newly planted Snow Maiden hedge shrubs.

Unsurprisingly, the small amount of snow that fell didn't last.
When I got home from dinner at a friend's last night the sidewalks were dry, but the wood-slat steps up to my apartment were icy!
I decided to use an old trick. I took off my shoes and went up the stairs in my wool socks. It worked very well!

Snow?! Wow! Though Scotland's due some tonight, though North and East I think, and the Highlands of course. Very clever to use the sock trick Randi!

All due to
The coefficient of friction (μ) is the ratio defining the force that resists the motion of one body in relation to another body in contact with it.

Is it the rough nature of the wool fibres that make the difference when walking on ice please Stuart ?
I understood that the same trick works well when walking on snow because the flexible wool surface prevents sheets of ice building up as snow is compressed by your weight on our shoe sole.

Then I'll give it a go
Though we rarely get snow
When it gets cool
I'll pull on the wool
and hope not to slip
when taking a trip.

It's easier to get these:
If you're in a place with serious winter, you want these:
Your feet will be warm even at -50C, and you won't slip or slide on anything, other than smooth ice that is wet on the surface. In that case, you need logging boots with cleats. But, if things are that bad, you're best to stay indoors.

Remember to take them off before you walk on the parquetry floor.

Very sound advice!
I'm not sure how useful they would have been on the wooden steps.

Great on wooden steps!!! Not so great on smooth concrete floors. Not that many years ago, in smaller logging towns, you would see signs on the doors of some businesses saying that you could not enter if wearing boots with cleats.
