Especially considering two feet of snow had already fallen by the time I called him. He couldn't even have been looking at his wind gauge while sitting in his office. Was he engrossed in a good book? Watching TV?

One of my friends was a weather observer in Cape Dyer on Baffin Island: 66o36N 61o35W. It was his first spring at that station, and he reported thunder for several hours. When he finally went outside to see what was really going on, he discovered that it was as clear as a bell and the sound he had been hearing was not thunder but the sound of the sea ice breaking up.

Weather observers not going out side: the challenge of being a weather forecaster!

I used to work in a west facing office. Across the road was a playing field so you could see the weather coming (most days) for the next hour's worth of weather. A co-worker said that they were going to dash up to the Market and back (at least a half hour session) so no point in taking a brolly. I looked out and said 'ok - it's up to you but I wouldn't go for another 20 minutes'. They left. Two minutes later the heavens opened and it rained like cats and dogs for twenty minutes. Amazing how simply looking upwards can be so useful :)

Hello, My name is Ethan and I joined just earlier this week.

I have always had a fascination with the ocean and history. From reading books about the adventures of many famous pirates to listening to sea shanties and sometimes even singing them myself I have grown very fond of anything related to naval history. That is why during a school presentation on Civilian Science I had to look for one that would match my interests so after a good bit of searching, I found this wonderful place and could not be any happier. I hope to meet all of you on the forums in the future. :D

Hi All,
I can't remember if I introduced myself already...I joined OW a few months ago. I recently retired from NOAA, where I worked at a Great Lakes research lab for over 40 yrs. My group developed and ran a lot of hydrodynamic models and used many weather data products. OW seemed like a nice extension to this work and reading through the logs has proven quite interesting. Randi has been helping me through the tough spots.

Hi!

My name is Hannah-- I joined a bit earlier during the school year and have been slowly making my way through some Burton logs :) The way I found OW was pretty simple! I was looking through the NOAA website for some internship opportunities, and found Old Weather under the volunteer tab 🚢 I've always liked looking through historical documents and this seemed like a positive and peaceful thing to do. Excited to continue!
