Each log writer is likely to have a peculiar writing style and spelling system. In the most exaggerated cases the spelling of one word may vary even in the entry for one day.

Sherman's handwriting is fairly straightforward and consistent. Like anyone, he occasionally squishes together the letters at the end of a word, but for the most part it's fairly legible. He does have some specific foibles, though, such as the way he writes the letter "T"
In the below two samples are three different styles of "T" that are common in Sherman's writing. The uppercase "T" is the clearest and is styled with the loop on the left hand side. The first lowercase "t" - in "Sept" - has the two parts of the letter floating separate because his writing angles upwards. The second lowercase "t" - this time at the beginning of a word - crosses more than one letter in "the" because it was dashed off briskly.
