Wondering 'What's with the fish on a string?' I had a wander around the internet to find the story of Tobias and the Angel and on the way the Wiki entry for the painting says that Leonardo may have painted the fish (and the fluffy dog!)

I presumed that the fish on the string represented the Christian fish symbol with, perhaps, string to tie him to the Christian faith? Or perhaps to make sure that he can keep a firm grip on the fish rather than let it slip through his fingers? The fish appears in Early, Renaissance, and Gothic art and is still used commonly today.
The Fish is a very early Christian symbol used from the first century. The Greek word for fish, Ichthys, upon which a rebus (word puzzle which uses pictures to represent words or parts of words) was created, is derived from the first letters of Greek words meaning "Jesus Christ, son of God, Savior."

Caro- Happy birthday! I can see you were quite a precocious young woman when you started ten years ago. I had pictured you as a scholarly person with eyes tired from working on a computer screen- not a young woman in the most beautiful dress with stunning eyes.

OW'er speaking of citizen science to his gathered colleagues, hoping to win them over to the cause.

I did this recently - at work, we've started doing something called "Lightning Talks" where one person gives a short, informal (no PowerPoint) presentation on something that interests them.
So I used this to talk about citizen science - not just OW, but the Zooniverse and BOINC/WCG too.
It went very well, people said it was quite interesting. A couple even said they will consider joining the cause!
