Wednesday, 23 February 1955
Underway through Queen Charlotte Sound
0125 Dr Oishi performed an appendectomy on Briscoe, Thomas (307-155) FN.
...
0515 Appendectomy on Briscoe Thomas (307-1550) FN completed.
At least it was relatively calm, with a sea state of only one. It can get very rough there at that time of year. I don't even want to imagine having surgery with the ship bouncing about with a sea state of seven or eight.

Given they started in the middle of the night and the duration, it must have been pretty serious.

FN is Fireman

How about the Antarctic doctor who performed an appendectomy on himself?

The voyage for 1955 has been completed. Many thanks to Stuart who did a great job. The voyage plot can be seen here, and the KML file can be downloaded and viewed in Google Earth. The KML file shows the voyage and ice data for each hour.
