1911 — Off San Diego, California, airplane manufacturer Glenn Curtiss demonstrates the capability of the hydroaeroplane with a flight to the armored cruiser Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser No. 4), where he is hoisted aboard by crane. After spending time on board, Curtiss and his aircraft are lowered onto the water for the return flight to shore. The hydroaeroplane is essential to the demonstration of aviation’s adaptability to naval purposes.

1865 — With Fort Anderson neutralized Union forces head up the Cape Fear River from the North Carolina coast. Gunboats under the command of Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter engage Confederate guns in Fort Strong, supporting a ground assault that results in the evacuation of the position by its Confederate defenders. The path to Wilmington opens and the Union ships steam to the city, which is already occupied by Union troops (19–22 February).
