I just saw your username elsewhere and was like "wait a minute, I know that name from Joan's files!"

Happy to have you back, espross! :D Wish the whaling section was still active so we could have you back in that section, but we're on a pause at the moment. :(

Great looking sailboat!

I've been working on Old Weather since last April, but I haven't actually introduced myself. I'm a retired engineer who's looking for worthwhile projects to work on. I'm also taking AI classes with IBM; both to keep my mind sharp and to potentially do some contract work if I get good enough at it. I live in the Dallas metro area, but my wife and I are in the process of moving back to the North East. It's getting a little too hot down here.

Hi Bill,

It's nice to hear about you. I can sympathize with your need to escape unbearable weather! Good luck with your move.

Apparently I haven't introduced myself yet, so here goes:

I'm Giulio, I first found Old Weather on Zooniverse which I found from the BBC TV show "The Sky at Night" back when it was just the GalaxyZoo and I was just a fresh faced Physics undergraduate. My first memories of Old Weather were travelling back and forth between Simons Town and Freetown on the HMS Kent. Since then I have been occasional participant in Zooniverse and Old Weather until I stumbled on Old Weather Whaling and found those logs a lot of fun as they were usually pretty eventful and I eventually came to the current version, focusing on weather transcription while keeping an eye for interesting things in the events page.

I am a scientist by trade, working in R&D in the tech sector, however I was always keen in history from a young age and reading the logs and trying to dig up information about the ships, places and people our ships encounter really helps satisfy that part of me.

It's good to hear about you, Giulio! I was a fresh-faced Physics undergraduate myself, many many many years ago!

Showing that old habits die hard...

A funny thing happened after we took this photo. We were at a sports bar with two friends of a similar age. I showed them the photo, but they had no idea what it signified. Our server came to take our order, and I said, "You old people know nothing. Do I need someone younger to explain this," and I showed our server the photo.

Immediately she said, "Newtonian physics posits a deterministic universe. Nils Bohr proved otherwise!"

Needless to say, Mary and our two friends were dumbfounded and none the wiser!

Unknown to me, she had her Masters degree in Physics, and she was working a summer job as a server before she finished her teacher's training!

The two of us then had a great discussion about Bohr, Einstein, Feynman, God playing dice, the Higgs Boson, gluons, colour charges and the three states of neutrinos while the other three looked on in stunned silence. It was a very fun evening, and not to be expected in a sports bar.

I know what you mean. I joined to help climate research, but what keeps me going is the snippets of history and shipboard life on the events pages.
