Muster Rolls of U.S.S. Lackawanna, 1874-1875

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Lackawanna: general for some general background and discussion.
See Lackawanna: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

I'll take Lackawanna January 1875 next. The log starts with the "Observation for determining the local deviation of the standard liquid azimuth compass..." Do these entries need to be transcribed? If so, is there an example I can go by?

No need to transcribe those.
Thanks for checking!

For the start of a log book I just enter like this in the tracker page. (scroll to see right side of page.)
Michael then knows why some pages have not been transcribed.

Unless there is something unusual, I don't bother to put an entry in the Comments column.
The X is sufficient to indicate that you looked at the page and there was nothing to transcribe.

On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with using the comments column :!:

Thank you for that Randi. I've always cringed at the start of a new log because of the time involved in filling in the comments for each page. That's great if just the "x" will suffice.

I put the comments in mainly so it's easier to find the Instruments and the Compass deviation if anybody needed them.

This is just a heads-up: I'm working on Lackawanna January 1875, but the Transcription Status sheet still shows that it's available. I just wanted to make sure that someone else didn't try to work on it and we had a duplication.

It shows it Reserved now. I might have missed changing the entry from Available to Reserved when you asked. Such things do happen. If someone was working on it, the tracker would show that.

Do you want the next months, too?

As for trackers, I'm OK with just your handle and then a D or d for "Done" and X or x for "Read and nothing to transcribe". I suspect I'm the only person who looks at them, other than the person marking that a file is done. I'm mainly interested in the name of the transcriber and how close they are to finishing the particular voyage.

I used to fill in all the various things, like DWLC etc and noon position in comments, but I did that as an exercise in programming using awk. My script read a month's worth of XML, generated the necessary data for each XML file and put the data in a dummy file. I then copied the file and pasted it into the tracker. It took me about two seconds to fill in the tracker for a month. Now, I just put Michael d in the first line and then copy and paste it down to the end of the month. ;)

This started out as a general system for transcribing logs with multiple transcribers per page - like the original Zooniverse version.
Now that we have become specialized (weather and location) with (almost always) a single transcriber per page we decided to simplify the system.

You can see a tracker with the new format here.

Enter your name to claim a block of pages and then enter x or d once you have processed the page.

Does this apply to the old trackers that still have the instructions to use DLSCWI? Are d and x sufficient for all trackers going forward? That would be great.
